It's coming up on 4 years since this thread was last active, so, I thought I'd breath life into it again. I'm hoping that in the last 4 yrs, someone may have come across more information on ex VIA Rail 6767 that sat on a lawn in front of a cold storage business in Dunn NC for 6 years - late 1990s, early 2000s

6767 has been at Cuyahoga Valley Scenic and as of now it is at Ohio Locomotive Works in Lorain, OH. The Alco 251 prime mover has been removed and they may be converting it to a cab control and head end power unit for CVSR. You can view photos of 6767 on Ohio Locomotive Works Facebook page. The 6777 is under going a major rebuild that involved an entire sand blast and primer paint job of the interior and exterior which included removal of all the sheet metal at Midwest Railway Preservation Society in Cleveland. the loco is back at CVSR and other contractors are working on the final paint job, replacement of the sheet metal and rebuild of the 251 engine at the Fitzwater shop. The 6771 and the 800 are operating at CVSR. CVSR hopes to have the 6777 running again in a few months.

What happened to the 6767? This was a running locomotive at one time, correct? Judging from the pictures on line, seems like that locomotive has not run in about 10 years or so....

First a little about me. I live Down East in Canada. I retired (14) yrs ago after 35 yrs as a civil servant with the Province of New Brunswick. I am (70) yrs old and this project I've been working is of a personal nature. It is my hope that you will be able to help me in my search for information.

I am compiling a photographic/textual history on each one of the MLW built FPA/B-2/4s, which will be on a website dedicated to the FPA/Bs. My goal is to not just show roster shots but, show the FPA's at work, rest, play, 'bad hair days', wrecked, being rebuilt or in the junk yard from 1958 to present day no matter their paint scheme. For this project I am only concerned with the FPA/Bs originally built for use in Canada (CN).

I had started this project in 2006 but, deaths in the family (between '06 - '10) had made me lose interest in everything until this past summer (2012) so, I'm back at it again.

I have only been a member for a (4yrs) and have been searching past topics on the FPAs and have found a lot of information you wouldn't find on a photo site which adds to the story. My first post (this one) is rather long, but, I couldn't see how I could present myself in less words.

I am having a problem finding out the name of an owner who lived in either Benson or Dunn NC. In 1991 he purchased a passenger car from VIA Rail but it was wrecked before he received it so they offered him an FPA-4 as a replacement. The unit no. was 6767 and it sat on the front lawn of his business in Dunn NC from at least 1996 till 2000 when he passed away. D.F.Barnhardt sold it for the man's estate.

Would any one on here know who the deceased was, why he had etc. or could direct me to someone who might? I have contacted the newspapers in Dunn and Benson for help thinking that a diesel engine being moved in to town then out would have garnered some attention from the papers. However, in order to find out if it did it would require them replying to my emails.

(I changed colour of this paragraph as it is separate it from 6767's request) I'm also seeking information on a photo I saw about 16 years ago that showed an ex Via rail FPA sitting by or on a wharf or dock and across from it at a 45 deg. angle sat a cruise ship(?). There were 1000s of people around the ship so it might have been a floating hotel or a casino too. I thought it might be in California but I believe the FPAs didn't get that far west. So it left Florida and New Jersey but I can't find anything on it. So again would anyone on here remember that photo or no where it was taken?

Above is my first post, with a few edits for time/years in the past, which, started this thread. I should have included it in my previous post to tell exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully, this helps.

Also, thank you to ATK and trainsfireegine for your replies.

Unfortunately the restoration of 6767 and turning it into a cab car won't be happening since Ohio Locomotive Works went out of business. 6767 hasn't ran since the VIA years, and never ran on the CVSR. When it was down in North Carolina on display the stack was never capped causing its prime mover to seize up. I also heard that 6767 was recently overhauled before its retirement and was in decent shape overall.

It is really sad how many operable locomotives have been turned into inoperable locomotives by lack of a stack cap while in storage.

Out of business! I hadn't heard that, however I see on their Facebook page they show "permanently closed" status. That will effectively make the 365 an unsupported orphan! IMHO, me thinks that they should have left the 251 engine in that locomotive and left her alone!

So what will happen to the 6767?

They sent 365 to the Midwest Railway Roundhouse in Cleveland. Horizon Rail which leases 1 of the stalls is working on a way to get 365 to run. As for 6767 there aren't any immediate plans at the moment. Ohio Locomotive Works stripped it down to its bare frame and that was all they accomplished before they went out of business. Right now its on the deadline track at fitzwater yard, and I think its prime mover is on a flatcar covered with a tarp.

The engine on the flat car should be a RTO 251 that was purchased years ago from the Morristown & Erie for the 6767.

Exporail / The Canadian Railway Museum has CN #6765 (FPA-4, built 12/1958) inside its main display hall. It is not operable and still has its steam generator.

It also has CN #9400, FA-1, MLW built 4/1950, which is also inside the main display hall.

Hello everyone.
I'm still around and still searching. The only thing new in my life are the 2 hip replacements I got in 2016 and no more pain.

I'm still chasing down the owner of 6767, when it sat on the lawn of a cold storage place in NC and any photos of it being moved in/out of town, and the picture of the FPA still in VIA Rail colours that was sitting on a wharf somewhere with a cruise ship tied up. It could have been there as an excursion train for the ship passengers too. I've contacted a lot of cruise ship companies, some cruise planners and ships passenger forums, asking about the engine, but, no one remembers seeing it.

Well that's it for now. Thought I should check in to let you know I'm still on the hunt.

Take care.

Carroll,

Here is a current image of a VIA train at the cruise dock in Halifax, Nova Scotia (2017). Is this the setting you recall from the FPA photo? Maybe this photo will help narrow your search to this location.

Thank you for the link Wesley. I do appreciate it.

Unfortunately, the engine I'm searching for is an ex VIA Rail FPA-4. I have no road numbers as they were obscured by vehicles and buses IIRC.

Carroll,

Even though the photo is current, does the setting at the Halifax pier look familiar to the FP photo you remember? Hopefully you can narrow your search to Halifax.

No. From what I recall, the foreground was full of parked vehicles and no breaks for tracks. Where the cruise ship was tied up, it and the wharf it was tied to, were facing the camera. The wharf the engine was on along with the engine and vehicles was at right angles to the ship, going off to the left of the the photo. The people getting off the ship were walking towards the camera then they veered off to the photos left and walked in the direction of the engine.
