Its great to see the team is doing a great job getting 4014 ready for reassembly, but it looks like they have a ways to go. Im glad they had the foresight to order and purchase parts they knew they would need to save time down the road.

Hats off to these talented guys!

The day that 4014 is fired up for the first time you know that is going to be huge around Cheyenne let alone her break-in run.

After all the hate and discontent over the UP Steam Program, it seems that they have gotten their act together pretty well. Looks like they will have their three locos going thru their 1472's on a 5 year rotation. So we can look forward to lots of UP steam opportunities in a another few years!

In another place on the internet, it has been suggested that replacement bar stock (i don't know if "bar" or "plate" is the correct term for the material used for the "leaves") for the leaf springs is going to be hard to come by. Folks here with good background in metallurgy may offer some insight. C&O 2716 is in need of replacement leaf springs too - this has been explained and shown on their 2716 Facebook page.

As long as they have the formula for the steel they can have it made. As long as you have the specs for anything you can get it made. The UP will be able to get anything they want made it is all a matter of dollars. Just last year Ed Dickens was wanting to have new Axles and wheels made for all 3 along with cylinders and rods or all the steam engines. If he can get the money for the parts he will get what he wants made.

It will be nearly impossible for them or anyone to recreate the leaf springs. Leaf springs are a cutting edge nuclear age technology barely understood by our world's top scientists, and made of some of the most rare materials in the galaxy. The builders of the 4-8-8-4's had contacts with alien contractors who supplied the originals and they are better then anything that could ever be made again. Since the originals were forged from unicorn tears and foamer dreams on the nitrogen atmosphere of Neptune, they will be forced to make inferior replacements using 200 year old technology that was common in blacksmith shops around the world and still used today on millions of brand trucks and equipment worldwide. We'll call them elliptical springs.

Some European freight cars still use leaf springs. I was looking at some yesterday.

Shouldn't this get you banished by the same people who don't like April Fool's gags, for the same reason--someone might actually stumble across it out of context, and cite it as gospel truth?
