Adirondack scenic bought them upon retirement from CDOT along with at least two other coaches and three power cars. All were stored at the railroad's former shops in Rome NY. They were looked at as cars for future expansion. Most of them sat, with only one power car and coach being put into limited service. Security in Rome was not the best and most cars got the majority of their windows smashed. A change in management saw most of the cars sold off, with one power car going to New York Susquhanna & Western (now at the Kentucky Railway Museum) and these five coaches and one power car going to NS (who thoroughly rehabbed them). Adirondack Scenic retained three cars: the cab/power car which gets used for big trains that need the extra power generation; a coach that was put into service, originally with it's commuter seats, then turned into a table car, now turned back to a coach using seats from a VIA coach (matching the rest of the fleet); and a second coach that has been held in reserve for future rebuild and is still as acquired. I do not speak for the railroad and have no inside knowledge but have been around it for a long time and remember these things.

All of the cars had seats. Not the best seats in the world, but they were there.

They'll end up selling them for far less than they spent rehabbing them but to NS its coffee money.

Does anyone have the approximate data to fact-check this pronouncement? <:-)

The following information is second-hand from a source I consider knowledgeable;

Coaches sold for $240,000 to $280,000. Two were purchased by the Finger Lakes RR, the others were purchased by a private party for use in Alaska.

Hi-nose GP38-2 prices ranged from $75,000 to $105,000, somewhat higher than expected. The three lo-nose GP38-2 units sold for $200,000+/unit to LTEX, which purchased a total of 19 units. Other multiple unit buyers were Metro East - 6 units and Progressive - 22 units.

All MP15 units were pulled from the auction. Apparently not much interest in part due to having an unusual after-market transition system installed.

As an aside, current market prices for SD40-2's range from $105,000 for a rough unit to $215,000 for an interchangeable unit in good condition with a current blue card. These prices are based on relatively few sales. There is a big overhang in the market. LTEX has in excess of 400 units, which does not include hulks being salvaged for parts. Wells Fargo is content to hold "several hundred" lease units, many at Metro East, awaiting a lessee.

As an update to my original statement, I have been corrected: The 10 CDOT cars were on Adirondack property and carried Adirondack reporting marks, but we're privately owned at the time. ADK bought two coaches and one power car from the private owner, and the others were sold to NS and NYS&W. Also the two coaches purchased by Adirondack Scenic at the NS auction are #43 & 45.

Thanks to a posting today on trainorders.com, here is a link to the prices paid for all lots at this auction (parts, GP38-2s and passenger cars). Of course it doesn't include the curiosity-satisfying names of the winning bidders, but the pricing data is accurate. I'm not sure how persistent this link will be, so might want to look soon if you're interested.

I should discretely point out, for those not used to "big league" auction houses, that the indicated priced did not include a 5-6% buyer's premium (in-person/online), nor a 5.3% sales tax added to the total of bid and premium. NS was no doubt charged 5% additional as well.

So for all practical purposes add another $20K+ to each price.

Why the Dash 8 parts, I wonder? Are they specific to the C40-8's or the now retired B32-8's?

NS still has their C40-8W fleet and they're consistently very active with only 3-5 members or so in storage at any one time. So I would think that if they're compatible, they'd have a use of their own for them.

Passenger cars went for
NS-43 $160,000
NS-44 $185,000
NS-45 $190,000
NS-46 $205,000
NS-47 $275,000

As best I could tell, everything sold onsite at the auction so there was a 5% buyers premium added. If you were from out of state, hence "shipping" across state lines, there were no taxes charged.

15 of the engines went for in the $70,000 range with the cheapest being $72,500. Looks like 20 went in the $80-100. 15 in the $100-120. A handful in the $140-165. 3 went for $215, $230, with NS5157 going for $255,000.

Is this one of the auction units? https://www.facebook.com/colebrookdaler ... 7267612098
"A NEW ADDITION TO THE COLEBROOKDALE FLEET will soon arrive! Norfolk Southern has informed us that locomotive 5128 will be leaving Roanoke for its journey to Colebrookdale Junction in Pottstown. The locomotive will be dedicated in Colebrookdale colors next year. It comes to us courtesy of a generous donation from the Scott and Susan Bentley Fund. Thank you for your support."

NS 5128 was sold for $75,000 (+ 5% buyer's premium) to an onsite bidder at the auction.
