I would be greatful for information on the Burro and the American.

I seem to recall that the Burro was one of the ex-Tennessee Valley Authority pieces that we acquired. The American (as seen in the photo) is currently rigged with the bucket and used for coaling and ash cleaning. 903008's last major project was lifting the wheel shop machines into place when the shop was being constructed. TVRM has also used it for demonstrations during events such as DOWT. I believe that they have at least three operators qualifed to operate those beasts.

Alan,

Can you find the builder's number for the American or the Burro?

It's waiting for the buyer to get track ready to accommodate it and the tender car.

Is it going to stay at the Western Ry Museum or be moved off site?

I recently contacted the Western Railway Museum and asked about the SP steam wrecker they wanted to give away six years ago. A few parties were interested but the $50,000 for asbestos removal plus transportation off site seems to have killed interest. It is still setting at WRM.

It will be moving off-site, as I noted previously.

I was contacted today by the individual involved, and things are moving along at a satisfactory pace. He is preparing a track to store the crane and its support car, which takes time.

As can be seen from the date of my previous post, a "satisfactory pace" is slow by most standards, but since we have been trying to find a home for the crane for over twenty years, that's OK.

I'm not at liberty to disclose further details at this time.

Good to hear. I am glad this wrecker isn't going to join the ranks of deassecianed (aka scrapped) rail cranes.

These are not steam cranes; but a number of the electric museums like Seashore Trolley Museum have cranes. In addition to the electric ones; Seashore has a Boro crane of Maine Central ancestry, which is used for track work.

There are three Differential Steel Company electric cranes around. The Baltimore Trolley Museum traded one to the the Shore Line Trolley Museum in exchange for a home built Baltimore crane. And the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum also has one.

The Illinois Railway Museum's Rail & Wire devoted almost an entire issue to their steam and electric cranes; the early issues can be found on the museum's web site.

Last year the IRM used their own cranes to unload their newly arrived D&RGW turntable at a storage site.
