These photos are courtesy the Corbin Convention and Tourism Convention and show the progress on L&N 2132 in Corbin, KY. As you may recall, 2132, a South Louisville Shops-built 0-8-0 languished for decades in Bainbridge, Georgia. It was rescued a few years ago and is undergoing a cosmetic restoration. I believe Wasatch Railroad Contractors is undertaking the work.

I wonder what kind of paint they are using to paint out in the open like that. I assumed that some sort of tent was usually required. Anyone know for sure?

David -

Locomotive looks pretty good thus far in primer. This is the engine that was "cut in two" before its first move. Do you possible have a side view of the 0-8-0 that might show how this cut now looks?

Looks good but they need to remove the visor from the headlight.

The locomotive was cut into 3 pieces when it got to Bainbridge, as they wanted to make it fit on a city flatbed truck to get it from rail to the park. The flues, tubes, tube sheets, grates, grate bearers, and a lot of other internal parts and piping were removed and scrapped at that time. Once it was in place in the park, they did a quicky "weld" job that left large gaps between the cut sections of the boiler.

The new jacket pretty well hides the torch cuts in the boiler. The main rods and side rods were cut as well as the frame, at the same time. Imagine putting the locomotive into a giant guillotine and making two cuts from top to bottom, leaving three pieces, and you'll get the picture.

The headlight visor will go away and the lense will have "2132" painted on it.

The photos show it being primered, not painted.

Here are some photos of the locomotive, after apparently receiving some black primer, which looks a lot like finished paint.

Seriously, will look nice when finished.

The funny thing is I grew up in Tallahassee, not far from there, and never once went to go see that locomotive in the 28 years I lived in that area. Odder still, I drove right by that park several times in my 20s and always assumed I'd go see it "eventually"...

Glad to see that it's a hardtop again. Sure is nice to see it get some TLC after a rough life in retirement.

This sounds like "Preservation by Scrapper"! The only thing different was that the loco ended up in a park instead of a furnace!

The restoration is finished, according to an article in the News Journal newspaper:
Quote:
When the Corbin Tourism Commission voted in January to accept the proposal to restore the L&N 2132 locomotive along with her coal tender and caboose on display on Depot Street, the goal was to have the project completed before Nibroc 2017 kicked off in August.

Monday morning the work crew from Wasatch Railroad Contractors took down the last of the scaffolding as Tourism Director Maggy Kriebel completed her final inspection of their work.

“There are a few last final details such as touching up the paint, but the work is essentially complete,” Kriebel said adding that when the pieces were first trucked into Corbin in January 2016, she didn’t envision them looking like they do now.

“It has exceeded my expectations and I think you can say the board’s expectations,” Kriebel said. “When she was brought in, most people thought it was nothing but a pile of junk.”

“We have had a running joke in which we call her ‘Lazarus,’ because she had been raised from the dead,” Kriebel said of the locomotive.

This is a nice project to see through to completion, I know L&N historian Ron Flanary was heavily involved making sure they got the look "just right," including details of lettering and graphics.

Did this thing ever get completed and the details taken care of
to satisfy the fundamentalists?

I was unable to download the photos, but as of 3 weeks ago, she was "back in black" and all spiffed up for Corbin's "Nibroc" (Corbin spelled backwards!) Festival.

It really does look nice considering how badly it has been treated in the past.
