Shorpey's image. Dig the advertising on the side, painted on a tarp.

Did any of these survive into this era in any form?

Yes. Here's one example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_and_Truckee_Railway_Motor_Car_22

Hotel Cabrillo is still there. It is now the West Wing of La Valencia Hotel and is the three-story pink structure on the left.

Pretty cool story about the teen rescuing the car. At $15,000 for all involved with lifting and shipping, I'd say he got quite a bargain.

There's a photo I posted yesterday from my group, the McKeen Motor Car Company Historical Society, I was able to overlay another photo/postcard taken at the same place.

I'd say I got quiet the deal as well, $16,805 and 27 cents...they wouldn't let me round off the check, haha.

The car in the photo is almost identical to the car I have, and both served in San Diego, but both cars from the Los Angeles San Diego & Beach Railway were (believed to be) scrapped in 1917.
