Greetings:

While researching photographs for a project involving the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, a black and white image taken by the late Wil Whittaker showing EMD TR6 A/B set 4600/4700 at Willits California was discovered. It shows the set in EMD Demonstration paint, but with owner Southern Pacific's road name. During conversation, it was noticed there must be at least three major body colors (other than black) involved in this scheme, including a lighter color on the nose. This image can be viewed here:

Does anyone have information regarding this paint scheme, or the knowledge of a color builder's photo? Perhaps Preston Cook would have some information?

The closest image to determine the paint scheme is that of EMD DH2 Demonstrator 105 in 1953. Is this the same scheme on the TR6 set with yellow striping?

Lastly, what did Southern Pacific do to the wing on the car body? Is that black paint with lettering gray "SOUTHERN PACIFIC" in place of the EMD red?

Interestingly enough, the A unit in this image survives today in preservation, located at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California. I would be glad to present the museum with any information regarding the demonstration paint.

Thanks in advance for any help. It is greatly appreciated!

For general information, here is a list of materials giving the Dupont paint colors for the early 1950s era EMD Maroon and Red demonstrator scheme, provided to me courtesy of a helpful friend who saw this discussion:

Maroon = Dupont Duco 254-2336

Red = Dupont Duco 254-9089

Imitation Gold = Dupont Duco 254-54388

Black = Dupont Duco 254-2505

Blue = Dupont Duco 254-37391

White = Dupont Duco 254-1

Black =. Dupont Deluxe 254-762 for fuel tank & trucks

The blue is for the segments in the "football" logo which they reproduced on the sides of the cab.

I'm not absolutely sure but the trucks and underframe should be DuPont Dulux 88-762. That was typical for EMD. 254 prefixes were in the Duco line.

Eric, you are most likely correct on that. Many EMD Paint & Styling drawings show 88-762 Black Dulux as the underframe, trucks and fuel tank paint.

The other common black underframe paint used by EMD was 88-005 Dulux.
