I have made an inquiry into the current contact information. If something bubbles up, I'll post it. Nice to see some many people are interested in getting them into a better future.

Thank you. I made several inquiries with different parts of SEPTA's suppy chain, and no one knew or had heard anything.

At this point either will work for what we need. I just prefer Alcos and would hope to make it a locomotive again one day.

The pictures don't show it but those things are rotted pretty bad. They have EMD control stands in the cabs, engine rooms are gutted.

Had heard the rot inside was pretty bad. Are the detroit genset sleds still in these or no?

Gensets are long gone, the gel/grit does a number on the trucks and brake shoes too.

Outside of being a control unit there's really nothing left in these then. Just an empty rapidly rusting shell... huh.

Minor correction; SEPTA did not get 611, it is in South Jersey, along with 601, 602 and 614. All are slowly on their way back to becoming locomotives. 602 (L&N 309) is the closest to running again, followed (most likely) by 601, as both still have their 244s and 581s. 611 and 614 had Detroit 'sleds', but donor locomotives have been purchased to provide all of the missing major parts.

Don't forget the 604 (L&N 314) at IRM.

This is the best with which my contact could come up:

http://www.septa.org/business/material_sales/index.html

They are in Philly at their Wayne Junction shops I think, at least they were kept there when gel season was over.

We are now two pages into this discussion, and we still have no information at all that substantiates anything from SEPTA.

Mr. Glueck: How did you find out SEPTA was selling these, and what or who was your direct source?

An Amtrak employee who works around their storage site informed me. The photos, are not his, but came from another source. Hey, don't shoot the messenger. If they went directly to the torch and nobody investigated, we'd all be mourning the loss. There has to be a SEPTA office or contact from who further information can be derived. They won't disappear magically with some kind of sales or scrapping contract.

I saw a couple of AEM7s go exactly that way, over a weekend: the guy came in with a truck rig and even cut up the trucks down to the wheelset axles. No advance warning or competitive bidding that I could see (I think ADM IV reported this and can provide details).

Someone refresh my memory on that last DL109 carbody, which had been modified to the same kind of work-train vehicle.

It's good to have a heads-up, but the result of an appeal like this might be to have a bunch of museum people or worse start bugging SEPTA for 'donations' or providing railfan-like arguments why 'the locomotives need to be saved'. I don't know if that would make the responsible folks less inclined to respond to legitimate preservationists, but we've seen a few cases where Too Much Publicity has been said to cause short and long term problems.

We tried, put up a good fight. Had them in our grasp. Then the state determined they were owed quite a bit of grant money back if they were sold. The deal fell through. It was apparently just fine to sell them to a scrap dealer for next to nothing.

They are on the dead line and probably won't last the week. A last ditch effort to buy them from the scrapper would work but he wants quite a bit for them.

Another FA and F unit bite the dust.

That is a loss. Technically, an SP&S unit is going. Scrapper wouldn't consider selling it for the scrap value, based on museum value?

He knows they are historic and is willing to sell them, but wants 20k a unit. And if they are purchased, they would need to leave ASAP according to SEPTA.

Is that one of their brand new Silverliner V's already in a scrap pile?
