At last the Ideal NW2 is off to her new home in Williams Arizona. Good news story thanks to publicity on RYPN.

I would like to point out, for the official record, that this loco that "must be removed by Dec. 31st!" actually lingered on the property for six weeks past its announced "drop-dead" date before actually being removed. No scrappers showed up Jan. 1st.

Far too often, these dates or deadlines are taken as "absolutes" when they turn out to be anything but. In this case, what obviously happened is that eminently fair leeway was given to a group that both demonstrated a good track record for getting stuff done and (apparently) made a GOOD-FAITH appeal for flexibility and common sense.

The moral here: IF you are serious and experienced, and approach such supposed "emergency" offers or crises with due diligence and professionalism (and a good credit line!), those supposed "hard and fast" deadlines that discourage so many would-be preservation efforts often disappear like steam vapor. Not always, but often enough. We're not the only procrastinators or ones not able to book a technician on a moment's notice, after all.

And we may be watching another example with a certain steamer on the Gulf Coast as I type.............

It was off the disputed property by January 5th, the hold up has been the utter ineptitude of UP to first of all deliver a flat Car 30 miles, that took 4 weeks and got lost twice.and turned up on a rival railroad. And then the train collecting the cars and errors in their paperwork holding things up another 2 weeks.

That is one possibility, but there are others.

I don't recall anyone posting that scrappers would arrive on New Years Day. But the threat was there, nonetheless. As noted by another poster below, the disputed tracks were all vacated within a couple of days of the deadline.

There was never any question as to who owned the tracks. However, the owner took advantage of a lucrative offer from a third party, and not being stupid, evicted the tenant from all leased properties.

While we preservationists might not like it, it was the owner's property and his decision. And yet one more wake-up call to those who do not own the trackage and buildings they occupy.
