The two locomotives in worst shape in Utah right now, aren't really endangered and even one has a slow, but steady volunteer repainting program going on right now which will hopefully pick up again in the summer (Columbia Steel #300 at Heber). The other one I think of is Tooele Valley Railway #11, which resides in a fenced off museum. I sit on a city preservation commission in Tooele, and we have had Wasatch Railway Contractors give a look out there to asses future ideas for restoration projects. The engine needs a new coat of paint and asbestos removal (a large chunk of asbestos were removed by a volunteer many years ago, but a lot remains hidden under the boiler jacketing which needs professional work) . There are definitely some needs to help the engine, but nothing to pressing compared to maintaining the two wood cabooses. The city though has no plan to get rid of it, and hopefully we can move in the right direction to give it the upkeep it needs. I guess some of the engines in Ogden are in rough shape, but since I am not involved there I don't want to comment, since for all I know there might be plans to repaint and work on them that I am not aware of. As I said, these engines are in rough shape, but I would not call them endangered by any means since all of them are in museums/heritage lines.

Southwestern Idaho though, has some engines that are in very bad condition. There are two park engines in Pocatello, UP 2005 (2-8-2) and a DDA40X in Pocatello come to mind as being in rough shape and could use some TLC. UP 616 seems to be another park engine in rough shape. Idaho has a small dedicated railfan population, but a lot of their engines are in very small remote communities. Just looking at SteamLocomotiveInfo, there are many more small park engines scattered through out the Gem State.

As for the other inter-mountain states? Nevada has a very awesome group of museums and tourist lines which are doing a great job with the stuff they have. I haven't been to Arizona in a while, so I can't really speak to what is going on there.

Appears to be uncared for, saddle tank shows signs of moss growth, possibly still has asbestos.

Looks like she hasn't been touched at all in 20 years, covered in streaking paint and rust, still has jacketing and likely asbestos, fairly intact.

I visited this locomotive last summer. I have seen worse.
Although I'm not entirely sure if the asbestos has been removed.

Sister engine #48 is preserved up in Quebec. Davenport tender engines are a rarity as they mostly built tank engines. Not sure how many Davenport tender engines survive besides these two 1931 built 0-6-0's.

In my trips around the country to photograph various steam engines for my "Surviving World Steam Project"; it is engines like this one that concern me most. It is in very poor condition, and has no roof over it.

You could tell that at one point it and a fire truck next to it were moved there as playthings for kids to climb on; then fenced off when it became unsafe to play on. Locals probably have little realization it is there; much less any emotional attachment to it should someone decide to get rid of it.

This one is definitely one of the ones in the worst shape I have ever seen. I don't know if has any asbestos on it or not; but any engine in this condition with asbestos, lead based paint, and/or fuel oil still on board is in danger of having some environmental or municipal board levy the same death sentence on it as the Port Arthur engine.

Poorly maintained, still has jacketing and possibly asbestos, owned by steel company.

I thought this engine was bought by the gentleman in North Battleford who's been buying all sorts of CN/CP rolling stock over the past two years?

Reply to Great Western Sugar Co. locomotive in Sterling, CO.

The Ex-Great Western Sugar 0-4-0T located in Sterling, Colorado is locomotive #2121. 2121 was built in 1928 by Davenport, I believe it then went to a gravel company. It was sold to the Great Western Sugar Co. in 1931. She has recently had a coat of paint (All Black), the front beam is rotted pretty badly. Asbestos does appear to be present. These little "Dinkies" have a very special place in my heart as both of my Grandfathers worked for Great Western. Both remember the little engines very well.

I wouldn't call in endangered quite yet, but keep your eye on it.

Hope this helps,
Cody Muse

Would it be possible to winnow this list down to a top ten or so? Or perhaps a "danger rating", 1-10 with ten being imminent danger? It looks like the engines in the worst shape are small tank engines and the like, but a few are in relatively good shape but so large that it is difficult and expensive to move them, and one could see the owners, under pressure, throwing up their hands and cutting them. A ranking might give us all a way to focus. (I'm not a math or organization guy so I recognize that I am asking a volunteer to do work for us).

I know is not as fun as going to China but there is a steam train somewhere between Buffalo and Rochester. I just wonder to the Chinese save these things?
