The Western Maryland Scenic RR has acquired a former Western Md. Railway box car, still in remnants of original WM paint, from Ginn Grain Co. of Sidney, Ohio, which had been using the car as storage for decades.

With the WMSR's supposed money woes and their buying more WM artifacts, I wonder if 1309's chance of restoration is fading fast.

This car is a gem, and it couldn't possibly be more appropriate to their mission. It's something that would have been nearly impossible to pass up.

Also, I suspect the total investment in this isn't all that significant compared to the expense of 1309.

While your skepticism is deserved it has been said over and over again that they have separate budgets for various departments. If they put every penny into the 1309 there wouldn't be a railroad left for it to operate on if it is ever completed. As a Wild Mary fan it is awesome to see this boxcar preserved.

Very nice save! I don't see the Western Maryland car number mentioned. Anyone know what it might be?

Should be 26634, rebuilt in 1970 from an earlier class of WM boxcar. Definitely a worthy save!

In the photos above showing the truck move of WM 26634, the side that was up against the grain company building clearly shows the car number and a lot less wear on the balance of the cars lettering. The Kentucky Railway Museum has (or had) sister car # 26631, also with fading lettering. There is also a Western Maryland 40' boxcar at the Heber Valley Railroad which has been nicely repainted and, perhaps because it's a slightly older car, wears a paint scheme which was probably in place before the "speed lettering" scheme was adopted. The car in Utah is WM # 26309.

I am pretty sure the Heber Valley boxcar is an ex-US Army car in WM paint and not an authentic WM piece. An employee there formally worked on the WMSR, hence the WM paint all the way out in Utah.

utahrails.net confirms the Heber Valley Boxcar painted WM is ex US Army:

"Heber Valley has five former U. S. Army PS-1 boxcars, received from Hill Air Force Base. One has been repainted as Western Maryland; others will be repainted for other railroads that owned similar PS-1 boxcars."

wmfastfreight and Paul-NC:

Thanks for the correction. I'll amend my records. Here's a recent photo of the car at the Heber Valley:

Also a photo taken back in 2007 of a couple of the cars still in "Army Olive Green":

Not sure if one of the cars in this second photo was used to make the faux WM car.
