In the late 20s American Hoist & Derrick came out with a 7 1/2 ton gasoline powered crane to compete with the Burro. They called it the American Eagle. From scant data it looks like less than 50 were built between 1928 and 1946. Any specific information (builder's numbers, dates, users) greatly received.

Hi John,
Around 1977 I dropped off a part from my 1946 American 840DE to our CNW Track Equipment Shops in North Fond du Lac Wisconsin for rebuilding . Sitting in front of the Shops round house was a smallish American crane cab, very simular in looks to mine , sitting on what looked like a heavy duty short two axle shop flatcar with the boom still on . With the "boom" still on it ?? That didn't make sense , so I took a closer look and low and behold it was a complete and operational locomotive crane with a 2 axle car body. Easily twice the body length of a Model 40 Burro . Didn't have time to walk around it or take pictures. I never saw it again . At least now you and I know the CNW had a late model American Eagle that survived into the '70s .
I'll see if any of my friends remember it.

Mark

Thanks for the information. Please let me know if you find out anything more. In 1948 the American Eagle was replaced with the model 410. Only about 16 of these were built. One was:

2595 10 ton 06-50 D (4 wheel)
Litchfield & Madison Ry Edwardsville, IL
Chicago & North Western Ry #X2 1958

This may be the crane you saw. It looks like these small cranes were not a big money maker for AH&D.

While interesting how is the NP page relovent? It shows data for NP cranes 50, 51 & 52. The American 410s were NP #104 & 105.

John T there is a grey slider bar that takes you to the right side at the bottom of the window (on Firefox) and shows the 100 series NP cranes.

The NP records say the two 410s were retired before the BN merger in 1970. An AH&D document dated December 1, 1983 shows them belonging to the BN.
