Who brought in the excavator, ITM or Noblesville? I'm getting conflicting reports on this. March 1 was the eviction deadline..

The excavator is owned by Glynn's Demolition. I doubt that it was brought in by the city. There are no city employees on the site. Someone also moved some more equipment around late yesterday or early this morning. I doubt that anyone with the city knows how to run a locomotive. The privately owned ex-Monon locomotive was used.

I have seen, posted elsewhere that June 1st was the deadline and that ITM wanted it extended to June 1, 2019 and the city was unwilling to extend it.

It is unclear if any cars or engines are being scrapped or if it is just a general junk cleanup.

Maybe ITM is scrapping traction equipment to raise money to pay for moving the locomotives and cars that they want to keep to a new location. This would explain not saving any trucks or motors from the cars being scrapped as these parts represent most of the scrap value.

And it's a cryin' shame that the historic collection should disappear to save the toys for the big boys who want to play trains. It appears to me that ITM should have taken the word museum out of their name years, maybe decades ago. Nick, get out the checkbook, there's a Union Traction Co. car to be saved.

I know someone that has purchased a car from ITM and for what he told me he paid for it, it was way more than it would have brought as scrap.

The Chicago "L" cars would not bring enough money to move even one piece of equipment out of the ITM site by truck. The party that is scrapping them, is just ripping them apart with an excavator with a regular bucket and a thumb attachment. I really doubt that he is giving ITM very much for this material, if anything. They may even be charging ITM to do the job.

If, someone is offering to purchase the trucks, air compressors, control equipment from these cars, then why not sell it to them. This can then be used to offset any price difference to a scrapper.

ITM has a major problem with "Good Will" in this community and elsewhere. So, why not advertise that you have equipment for sale, it would cost them nothing to post equipment for sale on RYPN or Railswap. As a member of the tourist railroad association, they could advertise there as well.

There is a very basic question as it pertains to ITM. Who is in charge?

I have talked with several parties that had an interest in parts from the Chicago "L" cars as well as other electric equipment.

I was also told that an electric locomotive that has been allowed to fall apart will also be scrapped. It is a former Crandic locomotive. From pictures that I have seen of it, it is in very poor condition. The party that told me it was to be scrapped told the ITM that the trucks could be used by other electric operations, were very diserable and could bring some good money. He was told they were going to be scrapped. Why not offer these for sale first?

With a destroy attitude on this equipment, then why should people not question what will happen to the other equipment?

I live in Noblesville and I have driven through Forest Park on many of the last several weekends to see what is going on at the ITM.

Last Sunday was a very nice day, NO one was at ITM doing anything. If the ITM has a future or is planning on a future for ITM, whether here in Noblesville or elsewhere, then why not any work details to prepare for moving the equipment, cleaning up the property or stablizing this equipment?

All we ever see here is "Save the Railroad", ITM filing a new law suite, ITM equipment vandilized, all to gain sympathy. Where is some real true action by the ITM to save this equipment.

It would appear this may be a case of "if we can't have it, nobody can" attitude, which would be unfortunate.

More importantly, why would you as an individual, or on the board of a grant or donation-giving foundation ever donate money to an organization that treats its stewardship responsibilities like this, so flippantly?

Alco is correct, Westinghouse and GE isn't making interurban-era traction control equipment anymore. Baldwin and Standard steel aren't making interurban trucks anymore. This stuff has monetary value to other organizations that would likely far exceed the realized scrap price.

If ITM wanted to thin its collection in order to better facilitate a move, then they've had plenty of time to do it in an orderly way, using policies and procedures that are acceptable within the museum industry. Why do that instead of trashing what little good will you have left as an organization?

My organization could easily use all the seats, mechanical, and electrical hardware from an El car if it's possible to acquire it....... and a second set of it from another possibly for future use. Who do we talk to?

Maybe start with Glynn's Demolition and see if they can get you a contact to who is directing/authorizing the cleanup/scrapping work or if they can sell to you direct?

A more detailed account of the scrapping can be found on Frank Hicks' blog: https://pnaerc.blogspot.com/ . It appears that along with several of the decrepit CTA cars, former Indianapolis & Cincinnati interurban combine 606 has been scrapped as well. According to the blog, the 606 was the last surviving piece of equipment from that line, so it seems like a substantial loss.

I was at the ITM site today and ran in to John McNichols who is the current head of the ITM.

He says I am wrong about all the scrapping and that they want to sell their unwanted equipment. He did not give me a list, I did ask about a couple of pieces, some of which are for sale and some they are keeping.

If interested in anything, you will need to contact ITM about specific pieces.

This afternoon { Saturday } the green Chicago "L" car they last operated was loaded out on 2 semi rigs. It is also my understanding, from the party that has purchased it, the former fire damaged line car 606 will also be leaving. I think this is a former North Shore line car, that was last used by the CTA in Chicago.

According to the "Save The Nickel Plate" facebook page, ITM filed a law suite Friday in Hamilton County court in Noblesville. Have not seen any specifics on this.

So has any equipment actually been scrapped at all? This would seem to contradict many reports on rypn and elsewhere that equipment have been/are in the process of being scrapped.

I dunno, maybe I'm crazy but if they want to sell their unwanted equipment then wouldn't it be sort of a good idea to advertise that fact? Maybe post a list of what's available and what they want for it? And maybe have done this a few months ago or whenever they decided to get rid of this stuff?

I am glad that some of the stuff is leaving in one piece. I'm really curious about the burned line car, is that for restoration or parts?

That is crazy talk. The standard operating procedure for the disposal of historic rail equipment is to wait until the scrappers are enroute before whispering its availability, and certainly to NEVER put the word out. Its not like there is a free Classifieds specifically for rail equipment on the Internet or anything.
