The next project that Mark Knebel is undertaking is NKP baggage car # 344. This will take some work as evidenced by the photo of the car taken last Saturday 5/19/18.

Due to a drizzly rain last Saturday, Mark couldn't put primer on the one end of the roof that he had cleaned earlier in the week. But improving weather enabled him to get the primer on this week as evidenced by these two photos. He has encountered a problem however, and as soon as I can get the additional photos reduced, I'll also post them to this thread.

Mark has discovered "dots" next to the various vent windows in the celestory roof as can be seen in these three photos. I'll also try to post a couple of close up photos in a subsequent entry.

Here are a couple of close up photos of one of the roof vent windows. What do these "dots" signify? Anyone know? Also, Mark is asking if the celestory strip (where these vent windows are located) is painted Pullman Green as the rest of the car, or black like the top of the roof and the curved portion. Anyone know the answer to that?

Thanks!

Could it be that they're a form of numbering, to match screen with window, for someone who didn't have number stamps? Guess checking others to see the number of dots may give a clue.

I agree with Bob Hall; that's a poor man's number stamp for sure.

I see such marks all the time. They tell the repairer where that particular piece goes and in what orientation.

Another common one is numbering sash with Roman numerals, because Roman numerals can easily be carved on the edge of the sash with a chisel as they are all straight lines.

I think the deck is painted black - it doesn't conclusively prove the point, but similar car NKP 329 at the Monticello Railway Museum is all black above the letterboard (photo courtesy NKPHTS).

Peter -

Thanks very much for Tom Troike's photo of NKP baggage car #329 at MRM. Mark sent out an e-mail earlier today saying he found a small remnant of green paint on the section with the vent windows. My thinking is that perhaps that section originally WAS painted Pullman Green, but over the years, the Nickel Plate simplified their re-paintings by just doing the whole roof in black, as shown on number 329.

Things don't always go as planned! Mark got stuck in the coal remnants from the 2011 visit of NKP 2-8-4 #765 to the museum (first photo) and needed a bit of help from Cory Bennett's pickup (photo 2) to move the manlift out. Mark fired up the Orton crane and pushed the number 344 up about 20 feet so that future work will be away from the coal pile.

Mr. Knebel spent at least part of his Memorial Day working on NKP 344. Here is a photo he sent with the results of his work on the north side of the baggage cars roof. He says that, thus far, he has used about 3 and 3/4 gallons of Rustoleum primer.

Another update for his day to follow.

Mark found some problems with the roof of the car today of and documented them with these photos:

Photo 1 shows the rain gutter on the roof's north side over the sliding baggage car door on the east end of the car. The rust has moved the gutter away from contact with the roof and Mark says that the water leaking down has caused corrosion of the floor sill around that sliding door (not shown).

Photo 2 shows a patch that was put on the car, most likely when it was still owned by the Nickel Plate or possibly later by Norfolk Southern. Note that the bottom of one section of that patch has rusted through. There is also a patch of some type that was put in place at the curvature of the roof. This has also deteriorated through the years.

Photo 3 shows a close up of the patch at the curvature of the roof. Again, probably a NKP or NS "temporary" fix.

Mark worked on the 344 this past week. A couple of photos from Saturday, June 2nd, 2018.

Quick question. It's rather hard to see in the first photo below, but there is a five pointed star under the number 344. Have heard a couple of different reasons for why some cars (not only the Nickel Plate's) had this star under the road number on the car. (Note that it is NOT on the photo of NKP 329 at the Monticello Railway Museum.) Any explanation welcome.
