Pennsylvania Trolley Museum (Washington, PA) had since the 1960s used three reefers for storage. These were emptied several years ago following construction of our Artifact Preservation Building, a state-of-the-art warehouse facility.

Of the three reefers, one is headed to preservation. A 1954 40' ice reefer is headed to Age of Steam Roundhouse.

After multiple attempts to find them a new home, two 1954 50' mechanical reefers will soon leave the museum headed to scrap. Hey, we tried....

One out of three preserved is not a bad ratio.

Question: Is that 1954 ice reefer one of the last such cars built?

R&GV RRM has a 1958-built MDT ice reefer.

I believe that there are a handful of these in preservation.

I made an inquiry as to the availability of those artifacts 2 to 3 years ago.

I was told that they were going to non-profits.

I lost interest very quickly.

(I didn't realize how many salvage companies are non-profits)

These reefers also sound very familiar. I recall inquiring within the organization three years ago and giving them my email to receive pictures although I never quite did. In the last year or so I've observed an unhealthy habit of museums claiming they had contacted everyone about their de-accessions before they've scrapped them despite that fact that they never actually did do so. Didn't I speak to you directly David about these reefers and you told me your organization was using them for storage at the time? What has changed between then and now?

In some places (e.g., "ahead of the torch" on facebook) commenters post GIFs on every post, I really hope it doesn't start here.

Also not so happy: the GIF post is an "empty calories" post, like the popcorn Michael is eating.

I was just trying to lighten things up. Sorry, I will get rid of it.
I was not trying to derail or hijack the thread.

When PTM no longer needed these cars for storage, they were posted here, along with photos. The offering was to any other non-profit, but "as is, where is." I did respond to several inquiries at that time. I don't have the exact date, but a search should turn it up. In any event, nothing came of any of the inquiries. Our invitation to come inspect the cars was, SFAIK, never exercised. On that basis PTM determined it to be in our best interest to remove these cars from our property. The two mechanical reefers in particular were in pretty poor condition. The ice reefer was somewhat better, hence the interest by Age of Steam. This disposition is part of PTM's on-going effort to clean up our property. We all know what can happen when others view your facility as a junkyard.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you posted them in the classifieds on Oct 10th, 2014. On Oct 13th, 2014, you posted that they were claimed and no longer available. That is all I could find in regards to the sale or donation of the two reefers.

It's not about busting anyone, just trying to be accurate. What is the status of the reefers? Any chance for a reprieve if a party is interested?
