LIRR caboose # 29

This recently came up for sale via Ozark Mountain. It is located in Kennebunkport Maine. Does anyone know more about the car? It's rough, but restorable if the steel is still good.

Just curious to know if any of these other LIRR wood center cupola cabooses are still in existence besides number 29.

Hi Les. I believe one or two made it into preservation, I can't recall which group(s) has one. I'd like to up that number with this one.

Thanks for the info on LIRR numbers 12 and 14. Interesting that these cars had full berths up in the cupola when built. Never seen that on a caboose before and I wonder if these Long Island cars were the only ones so built.

Hope a "savior" comes for LIRR #29.

Les, I'd like that savior to be me. The asking is a bit high, but they are open to negotiating. Transport as always will be the sticking point. I have the space and resources to "git 'er done" otherwise.

I'm thinking the orange color scheme...

The Lehigh Valley RR “Northeastern” cabin cars were all built with full berths in the cupola. (Or gig top as that area was known on the LV)
I spent a lot time up there deadheading back to Oak Island in the day.....

This is one of two former LIRR cabooses at Seashore Trolley Museum. Back in the early days, one was used as an office and the other was a bunkhouse for members. The office caboose, I believe, was privately owned and later was the home of its owner.

I believe the steel and underside flooring is still structurally solid. Basically, it's neglect that has been taking a toll on the siding and roof.
Several LIRR center cupola cabooses remain. It would be nice to see this one added to the list.

UPDATE: This car will not see the scrapper! I have negotiated its possession, and we are now working out the details for its move back home.

The wood is rough (ok, ROUGH) but the bones are still good.
