Also a lead of dubious quality, there is an old listing on the semi-defunct Railswap site. http://railswap.org/osc/classifieds/ind ... em&id=1831

That's the same car I was referring to.

Here is a screenshot from a 2013 YouTube video featuring the troop sleeper. It is apparently of Detroit and Toledo Shore Line heritage.

Before anyone asks, the NKP caboose pictured is gone as well.

Gone as well? Am I correct in assuming the Pullman is gone, then?

You are right Bill about Sarx 24,sorry about that. That is what I had heard in the past and did not pay much attention to it. After some investigation it appears Sarx 24 was a 40ft boxcar converted for use with the Speno rail train (with windows and doors) and then back to a boxcar at some later date.

As stated in my initial response in this thread, yes.

Thanks for all the input everyone! I took a look at the car on the Facebook page at Southern Appalachia Railway Museum but the boxcar pictured does not appear to be a troop sleeper to me. Here is a summary of the troop cars brought up thus far:

Sleeper: Youngstown OH, Mahoning Valley, sold
Sleeper: Grand Rapids OH, Victor Geckle, sold
Diner: NC Trans Museum NC, Showalter Collection, no trucks
Sleeper: Scranton PA, Steamtown, availability?
Sleeper: Latonia KY, owner? availability?

We definitely desire a car with the original allied full cushion trucks. I will attempt to contact someone at Steamtown but as I understand, they are presently without a Superintendent and thusly may not be deaccessioning any equipment for a while.

Please keep your suggestions coming and thanks to all who have responded so far!

Bill Hanslik Jr.

Good luck finding one with an interior, let alone allied trucks.

Bill

Anyone want to check on the status of this one at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum in Maryland?

That's a former U.S. army kitchen car, not a troop sleeper. The windows are quite different. I imagine they were based on a similar design even though they were not built by Pullman as the troop sleepers were.

I have no clue if it's still there but there was one of the troop cars at Sarge's Towing in Portland, Oregon for a while. I remember seeing a photo of it in the yard, online.
I never saw it personally, though.
If you try to call, be aware that the owner of the tow yard was a huge military equipment collectors and I'm sure he knew what it was. He died in a high-profile accident with a WW2 tank destroyer he owed (he and a young man from my living history group both died very badly when the breech ring on the main gun failed while shooting live-ammo on a range for a video shoot): https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3293324/Two-killed-World-War-II-era-tank-explodes-Oregon-gun-range-Victims-died-blast-inside-vintage-war-machine.html
So, there could easily be no interest in selling anything he owned.

There are apparently two troop cars seen in a photo at the Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati.

The Illinois Railway Museum has two troop sleepers, and I think the Western Pacific Railway Museum has more than one.

In these cases, you could always ask if one might be available - but that does not mean you will get anywhere with a request. Good luck!

The Pullman troop sleeper at the Illinois Railway Museum had served as part of the gift shop complex of ex-baggage cars until last year. It was moved off an isolated track by the depot to join other equipment on the property. the gift shop is now located in a restored turn-of-the-last century former general store that served the people of Union Illinois for a long time.

To add to where they are now, the Alaska Railroad had a lot of troop sleepers at one time, obtained as surplus after the war. Six or seven still exist at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry (MATI). A sleeper and kitchen are (I think) unmodified. About five others are gutted and used as exhibit space. At least one is displayed which was converted to a flat cat and used as an idler for a steam crane. I believe these are all still on Allied trucks. The ARR also modified them for use as box cars by addition of side doors. Some were also modified as high cube box cars. Two sleepers would be sectioned and the roof section of one and the bottom of another were grafted back together to gain extra height. MATI also has a standard height box car and a high cube box car on display. A group of sleepers were converted to express reefers. The sleepers were also used as outfit cars in MOW service. There is one modified for MOW use on display with a rotary at a small park at the Potter section house south of Anchorage. It retains the allied trucks. The Engine 557 Restoration Company has one the was modified with an arched roof to match the line of the passenger cars and ventilators in the roof which was modified around 1950 for use as a power car. It may again see use as a power or tool car behind ARR-557.

There is a former Pullman Troop Sleeper that is now a storage car in the lower level of Grand Central Terminal. Ex NYC #9260. However, even if Metro North were willing to part ways, I assume getting it out of there would be fairly cost-prohibitive.
