Just got word and photos confirming all but one of these F40PHs are going to Larry's truck and Electric most likely for all thoes parts that can be used for GP and SD locomotives. Did any one even TRY to save them? IRM? Anyone? 409 is going to BUGX. I bet if these were foamer favorites like an RS3 there would be three threads on here and many inquiries but for the locomotive that moved America and set the standard passenger railroading the last part of the 20th century... NAH

Perhaps these 1970s passenger engines will fall into the category "I guess we should have preserved one in close-to-original condition, but actually nobody cares."

The turboliners, and a lot of other newer equipment, seems to fall into this category.

I guess it is not too late to try to save a shell from one of these engines, to maybe repower later. But who might go to all that effort?

Railroad.net makes it sound a bit more promising for the LTEX units. A lot of 4 axle EMD's escape there alive, unlike the SD's.

Not that we should be complacent but...

Some are running on heritage lines.
Some are in regular service.
Three are preserved- two at opposite ends of the country.

And to top it off, we can barely preserve the best of what we have much less what continues to “wait.”

Last time I saw some F40PH shells (shells is an overstatement the only body parts left was the cab) for sale the asking price was $25k a lot of small locomotive builders the tailor their business a smaller railroads use the frames of old units and build a new unit on top of them. Ironically $25k is what Amtrak was asking for them in the 2000s.

"Amtrak’s Wilmington and Bear, Del., shops recently disposed of the last for the F40PHR units [sic] for Amtrak and has sent the first P40-8 to scrap that was not wrecked. The units are headed to Larry’s truck Electric in Lordstown, Ohio, where they are expected to be parted out by the locomotive dealer."

I last saw the recent locos at Delaware with the AEM-7’s. With the recent purgings, how many AEM units are left? I saw in a railfan roster that 13 are left as of April 1st 2019. The last time I was at Bear, I believe I saw more than 13. Were more scrapped since the first scrappings?

Something to remember about preserving what is considered recent equipment.

The EMD E-7 was the largest class of passenger diesel, counting A and B units; ONE is preserved, and PRR 5901 was saved primarily because it is PRR's first road diesel.

So exactly how many bricks do we need to save? Wouldn't the money be better spent fixing up some of the rusting hulks that seem to lurk in the back lots of most museums or tourist railroads?

Like the F7 units all either for sale or set for scrap at the present time. The Milw units in Noblesville being good examples of locos that went too long without work being done to them.

I am glad though that one NJT U34CH has been preserved. They came before the Amtrak F40PH. The U34CH having paved the way for Amtrak to develop it's own HEP equipped passenger locomotive at the time by proving the concept of main engine driven HEP being viable.
