Do any of you recognize this starter motor? It came from a railroad car department environment and was going to scrap. Nobody knew what it fit, so it was going bye-bye, unless I took it.

Hate to see it go to waste, so thought I'd ask and see if anyone recognized it as maybe fitting some low horsepower EMD product.

I googled that part number on the neck of the casting and came up empty handed.

Other items that were getting tossed out with it included the solenoid for an EMD starter. This particular starter doesn't accept a solenoid, but I don't know whether earlier EMD's may have taken this kind.

I use SD40 and GP38's to switch with all the time, and this doesn't resemble the starters on those engines.
Heck, this may have been a spare for some forklift or big "wheel truck" that is long gone... but I'd just as soon see someone get it that could use it if it fits some locomotive somewhere...

Hope the pictures are enough. (MAN, they sure came out BIG). There were no other identifying marks on the thing.

Online, I found photos of loco starting motors. Even on Walmart website, of all places!

Seems similar. Try weighing it. A EMD starter motor weighs around 73 pounds. This website has photos of locomotive starters. http://sardello.com/locomotive-starter-motors/

That looks like the starter off of a Detroit Diesel two stroke diesel. There are a lot of them still running so if it works, somebody could likely use it. The motor looks pretty old which makes me think it may have come off of a 71 series engine. They were in production 1938-1995 so electronics came a long way over the run of that engine.

The 7 digit number looks like a Delco number. The starter looks like those used on the Cummins engines in our 1942 Porter at Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. These have an external contactor in place of a solenoid mounted on the starter.

Hey, come to think of it, this trove of stuff included a bunch of reefer parts, reefers which were running Detroit's!
The Detroit powered reefer has went the way of the Dodo bird. so they were disposing of all the spare parts.
I should have put two and two together.

That is a Delco 35MT. The number you posted is for the drive end housing. That housing is specific to 3 different 35MT starters: 1113601, 1113607 and 1109227. There is no specifics on what they fit, only industrial applications. My guess is that they are all the same starter in 12v, 24v and 32v.

It's tough to get an idea of the size of it without something in the photographs to compare it to, but it looks like a Delco Remy starter, maybe off a 45 tonner.
