Looks like work has stopped and maybe barely touched in the last ten years.

Here is an old restoration update on the 5056:

http://www5.irm.org/dieseldept/restoration/index.html

Quite a bit of work has been accomplished, but finding a replacement for a seized gearbox described in the link above (which I recall as being unique to the U25B) has been a stumbling block. The 5056 arrived at IRM in the mid-1990s from Miller Compressing, a scrapper in Milwaukee.

Might it be possible to acquire the gearbox and other parts from the Cascade Rail Foundation, which has acquired MILW 5057 from the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA for static display in Cle Elum, WA? This might be a win-win in terms of eventually bringing the 5056 back to life and reducing the 5057's weight, helpful for its over-the-road movement to Cle Elum.

Information on the MILW 5057 can be found at: https://www.milwelectric.org/5057project/

What gear box is seized?? The twin rad fan right angle drive unit? That is definitely unique to the U25B.

This is a bit of a late comment, but I was having trouble finding out if the other U28B (U30B) is operational or not; does anyone know? The VLIX #5323 was stored at the Kentucky Railway Museum for a while and there had been some rumors of purchasing and restoring it to L&N colors, but these were only rumors.

There’s some confusion about the new U28B.

It does in fact start and run. Battery boxes rebuilt, Crankcase overpressure switch replaced, and some other work has been done. It needs compressor valves re-worked and some injectors replaced.
