The Guardian carried an article on 31st August 2019 about old rail routes in the UK being used as cycleways. It suggested the 10 best routes where old railway formations are in use as cycleways. Theirs is not the only list of routes which seeks to provide a "Top Ten."

I have pulled together a few examples in the linked post below. I'd like to add at least one which does not feature in the top ten lists, and that is the Forest of Dean.

There are many such routes across the world. Which are the best?

There is an ongoing debate between those seeking to create Cycleways and those seeking to recover and reinstate old railways. ...

The debate is being played out on Anglesey. ....

We have the same thing going on here. In some cases, the best solution has been to have both, versus one or the other. Of course, the actual purpose here was to maintain the integrity of the right of way to allow rails to be relaid if needed for national defense or other purposes.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Boulder City (near Las Vegas) has a bike path on our right of way, crossing the line twice (currently) with a proposed extension which will cross a third time, then enter the museum property on its way into town.

There is an additional path on City of Henderson right of what which shares that right of way with an active switching operation... and is in the process of being extended onto Union Pacific owned right of way...

Generally the right of way is 200' wide... the railroads are class 1 or 2 so slow speed... there are fences...

We call it rails and trails It is well received in the community... For the current extension on to the museum site we have received three grants (two county, one state) totaling about $150,000, with more lined up for future phases.
