So, any word on the final status of the other A and B units that the R&N did NOT acquire?

The never-very-reliable railfan rumor mills have stated/speculated that the other two units failed to attract bids, and/or did not meet some unspecified reserve.

I am very, very skeptical of this suggestion. But if true, there's a possibility that they will either be offered in a future auction, or negotiations COULD be under way between the Reading & Northern and NS for the other two. It's also possible that the party I mentioned earlier might revisit the question, once they have more time to draw up budget line items or whatever. (I was told they tried to put in a token lowball bid with their moral equivalent of "petty cash from the drawer," but didn't think that would have stood a chance of winning and skipped out as a result. If the "no bids" is true, they're kicking themselves right now....)

And, of course, someone else could have won and is keeping their mouths shut until they actually arrive......

And the answer is: (via Altoona Works)

10G departed Altoona earlier tonight with former NS 275 in tow (renumbered from 4275 earlier this year). It’s on its way to new owner Reading and Northern.
271 and 276 have been sold to the Aberdeen Carolina and Western.

What's going on with the AC&W? Do they have a large sum of money they need to burn off? Last year they leased at least NINE CSX AC6000 locos. Those are thirsty locomotives (they burn 200+ gallons of fuel per hour in notch 8). Is business that good for them?

I thought they already had three or four F units?

These locomotives went to the ACWR shop for contract work on behalf of Progress Rail, not for use by the railroad.

They do (3), but they were in pretty rough shape and were being worked as a "time permitting" restoration. I believe the prospect of being able to have a full A-B-B-A set and a spare unit, plus acquire two in good working order was too good of a deal to pass up.
