Didn't CP at one time look at returning one of the 4-8-4s either 3100 or 3101 to steam ?

And then this happened:

Canadian Pacific No. 2816 to steam again for Holiday Train video

Yes they looked at 3101 in Regina, but that was quite a while ago now.

Yes, that's what I was told.
I believe it's privately owned,
and CP and the owner could not come to an agreement.

Again I was told, the idea was to have a backup engine,
like BCRail did with the Royal Hudson, and 3716.

This took a lot of people by surprise.
Including yours truly.

You will notice the engine will not be running on the main, only within yard limits,
and certainly not across the border.
And only for this one occasion.

This, I suspect, has to do with MC-3 Regs for US service,
and Form4...15year tube-pulling...in Canada.

god forbid they operate it on the mainline pulling the train for filming...

its kinda funny how quick they are to assert that it wont operate on any mainline.
Like what's the big deal?

Why not let them film it running at 40-50mph on a 20 mile round trip?

Because it has an expired boiler ticket, and may or may not have even had an annual boiler inspection.
Canada's federal steam loco regs are almost identical to the FRA's and do include the 1472 day inspection requirement. Google "RAC Circular M3" if you want to see them.

Guys, don't get all lathered up about these minor details. What's long term important is that the corporation obviously recognizes the PR value of this asset and have decided to bring it back to life to star in this new video creation. That would have been unthinkable when EHH was master minding his rein of terror over all things CP.

My WAG is that this will not be the only time they use her near term??

Hope springs eternal. Ross Rowland

Just curious for the technical details. What is the exception for operation within the yard?

CPR runs a Diesel powered holiday train from time to time, but I agree with Ross on this one. Christmas = snow = steam locomotive conjuring all sorts of good thoughts. To quote Ward Kimball (and Ross) once again, "With a Diesel it's a train. With a steam locomotive, it's an event."
Never lose hope. I mean, someday we may even see a Big Boy in steam, right?

I met with Walt Disney in 1964 to discuss the concept of a celebration train to draw national attention to the 100th. anniversary of the Golden Spike in 1969.

What he said to me was " with a diesel it's a train.......with a steam locomotive it's a happening".

I have since used that many times with proper attribution.

Thanks, Ross Rowland

First class move by CPR. It is unfortunate it cannot run the Christmas Train, but this will cheer up a lot of people.
