Since it’s been ignored so far I’ll ask the question again..

How many mallets are currently operating?

Big Boy, Skookum, Clover Valley, and the 2 in South Dakota... am I missing any? (Or are some of them not mallets?)

Big Boy is not a Mallet. It is a simple articulated.

I suppose the question could be “how many articulated steam locomotives are in operation.”

I note that the ONLY folks who have not posted here are the ones who ACTUALLY know the facts. All the rest of this is FOAM. The very same thing we all decry here on a regular basis. Until someone who actually knows the score comments here, we need to simply shut our traps (and lock our keyboards). Let's celebrate a success and not worry about the water that has passed under the dam(n).

5 operating mallets plus the Big Boy makes half a dozen articulated steam locomotives operational in 2021. Not bad!

I believe there was some grants issued to the #1309. Most grants have goals and time lines that must be accomplished by a certain date or they loose the money. That might have been why it was steamed up recently. California lost a 900 million dollar grant for their high speed rail line as they were too far behind schedule.

Yes, I understand that the operating parameters of WMSR are such that this engine "fits the bill", but just commenting that this is a rare occurrence. I modern day tourist service, it's unusual to find a train long and heavy enough to warrant the expense.

Technically while 1309 IS a Mallet, Big Boy is not. Big Boy is an articulated locomotive, but it is not a compound locomotive. On 1309 the steam is used twice. The high pressure cylinder’s exhaust is the sent to larger low pressure cylinder to allow the steam to be used again.
