Here's #486 at the end of its service life on Conrail as #5387. I believe I'd be hard-pressed to find a better photographic representation of the Reading's Brewster Green as it appeared to my naked eyeballs but I'll keep looking... LOL

None of Reading's RS-3's went directly to ConRail. RDG 486 was CNJ 1562 before it flowed to CR as 5367. Note that neither CNJ nor CR had repainted 486.

Both CNJ and RDG were bankrupt by then. RDG had withdrawn all of its RS-3's and was selling them to other roads, industries and brokers. That brought in more money than a scrap dealer and RDG locomotives had a reputation for being in good condition.

By then CNJ was as bankrupt as bankrupt could be, but B&O and RDG were using CNJ to access NY Harbor and NJ DOT needed CNJ to carry its commuters. So RDG sold CNJ 8 surplus RS-3's to keep the CNJ's trains moving. Paint costs money and since 486/1562/future 5387 already was painted, both CNJ and CR patched it. Note the paint that covered "READING" on 486 had washed away on 5387 while the earlier green paint from 486 remained.

All five of the surviving Reading RS-3's were initially sold off to United Railway Supply. None of those which went to the CNJ and eventually ended up on Conrail are with us today.

In that last pic of #1562, you can see how the low sun angle red light is causing the Brewster Green to appear much like the original Pullman Green. As a matter of fact, it almost looks like it's trying to tell people to quit tobacco... LOL

Of course, Alcos aren't the best spokesmen for anti-smoking campaigns and most railroaders here in the states would actually like that color. It's not all that hard to work with in combinations, really...

So if anyone needs any ideas on what colors they can use to compliment the very similar Pullman Green, there are a few examples.

Anyway, I was looking at photos of Anthracite's Reading #467 and finally found their whole picture archive collection. There's definitely some good ones there which are going to help out a lot so stay tuned.

Yeah Phil, those Alcos look pretty docile there coasting into Hellertown but I'm sure they were hollering and screaming coming up through Perkasie. LOL I thought that pic was a nice little tribute to the surviving five.

I haven't found an old Acme chip sheet with Brewster Green on it yet but here are some modern mixing formulas for 2015 from the Northstar MixMaster site. Current codes listed for this color are Axalta N0111, PPG 43845, and Valspar G075...

Brewster Green's old Duco number is 246-6505. Ford used the color early on as well...

Often times, Brewster was complimented with Apple Green as an accent color but not so here on this restored 1931 Model A...

The old Duco formula for Brewster Green is a bit different than the modern MixMaster's but that's the way it is these days... LOL

Here's the same 1933 Brewster Green Pontiac Eight resto in three different pics. In this case, Inverness Green, which is a lighter bluish green like Seacrest/Woodfield, was used as the accent color...

Back to the Rochester and Genesee Valley Museum again. This is the modern incarnation of Brewster Green they used to repaint their RG&E #1941 with. Here you can compare the Brewster with the much lighter U.S. Army Olive Drab #7 on the M1007 Chevy Blazer there on the right. The listed hue angles for both colors are actually very close to each other, 92 degrees for Brewster and 90 degrees for OD#7...

Now here's a really good low light Reading vs. Pennsy comparison. None of that higher contrast black mirror effect here except for perhaps a little bit on #700... LOL

HMMMM, lower ambient lighting does seem to help lighten up the two dark olive colors on camera...

With minor color adjustments on the better older pictures posted previously, I can match them up with the newer Brewster Green reasonably well. Another step closer, hopefully... LOL

Of course, no matter what I say, railroad folks are still going to call that color "Pullman Green" even though it's not. Old habits die hard and I'm a primary example of that old adage, myself. LOL

The Brewster did hold up pretty well over the years so, as a rule, if and when those units were repainted, it was into the newer colors.

Thanks to the Anthracite picture archive, I now know that GP-7 #636 was repainted in Venetian Yellow and Morat Green sometime around January or February of 1965. This is actually good news since speculating that there might be another cream yellow involved after 1962 was really messing me up.

So now I can go back to what I originally had thought, that the green and yellow combinations on freight cars, cabooses, and such follow that which was applied to the locomotives during the same time periods and the differences in the appearance of Venetian Yellow can be attributed to age, weathering, brand of paint, type of finish, and the like. Even though it can fade into a good resemblance of 93-5925, I believe I can now eliminate that color from the Reading entirely and maybe even give it to the PRR if it so applies.

#636 may have been the very first GP-7 which was repainted...
