PostPosted: Sun Dec 28, 2003 10:43 pm

Could anybody tell me what the ultimate disposition of some of Steamtown's equipment was?
So far I can list several places where engines and cars went.
RMNE- CP4-6-2 # 1246,B&M Movie Car 959, caboose ex C&C 50/B&M 104406, and CV boxcar 40098, as well as privately ownedCV 4014 a wood caboose.
Strasburg got a few freight and passenger cars as well as the 89 right?
Ohio Central got 1278,1293,1551, and 96.
One of the New Haven Trap Rock 0-4-0's was sold as well as the Mass Electric 0-4-0
Also a B&M coach wound up in private ownership.
The B&M 4-4-0 up at White River Junction VT came from Steamtown also right?
The 501 at Conway Scenic also was former Steamtown right?
Anybody else have some of the other cars/locomotives?

Mike,
The B&M 4-4-0 at White River Junction was never part of the Steamtown collection. There is a 0-6-0 that I believe was left in Bellows Falls and later moved to NH(?) for a display. The MEC 501 at North Conway was originally from the collection.

Anyone know what happened to the 4-4-0 park engine they had. Not sure whether it was a Cagney, Ottaway or International.

There was also the British engine, a 4-4-0.

Also, N&W 1218 was once part of the collection.

Steamtown had three "British" locos over the years. Southern Ry. (UK) 4-4-0 926 "Repton" and London & South Western 0-4-4T 53 were returned to British soil in the 1980s; 53 is now operable somewhere, and "Repton" is over there somewhere if not fully operable. In addition, an Irish 0-4-4T was returned to Ireland and now is serviceable on (I think) a restored stretch of the Tralee & Dingle Railway.

Repton went back to England and has been operational in the 1990s. Don't know if it is currently.

CNR 4-6-0 1395 was sold at the Scranton auction to a private owner in Michigan for $42K.

CPR 4-6-0 1098 was sold in the mid-80s to Geo. Hart and is in Jim Thorpe, PA.

The MEC 501 was actually owned by MEC, and was only on loan to Steamtown. When they moved out of VT, MEC gave the engine to 470 Railroad Club, and it was moved from BF to N. Conway. The MEC 519 had been transferred to Steamtown ownership before the move.

Strasburg's 89 was never owned by Steamtown, but by Blount's Green Mountain Railway Corp., along with 1246 and 1293. In 1972, GMRC sold 89 to Strasburg, and sold the two 1200s to Steamtown the following summer (1973). The freight cars went to Strasburg via the NPS clean-up campaigns.

The GN lightweight sleeper "Cheyenne River" went to a private owner on Cape Cod.

Repton is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (see link) in the UK. She is owned by Clifford Brown, whi is the man that brought her back to England from Steamtown.

She has been out of service for a few years, but work is progressing steadily and she should run in 2004.

It still amazes me to think I watched a "Schools" 4-4-0 climb Nay Aug gorge on the DL&W. That was one of my stranger Steamtown moments!

#1395 is now at Coopersville & Marne in Coopersville, Michigan, on display. I think she is still privately owned, and no plans for operation that I know of.

#1278 was leased to Cadillac & Lake City for a period in the early 1970's before coming back to steamtown as well. I think (should be on the OC website) she was there in '73 & '74.

Just a quick correction, the Irish narrow gauge loco is a 2-6-2T. It has been restored to operation. I believe it is still operational.

PostPosted: Mon Dec 29, 2003 1:20 pm

Just happened to find a 1971 Steamtown Collection Guide, also found a 1967 roster which must have been done just before Nelson Blount's passing.
1967 lists 44 steam engines. It mentions that there are 20 locomotives in the Edaville Collection. It also mentions that there were locomotives in Florida, South America, etc that were owned by Mr. Blount. There is a locomotive from France, a Mallet Compound, 0-4-4-0, that was still in France at the time. The 1971 roster also lists some of the other rolling stock.

The Park engine listed was from San Fransisco and was listed to be a 4-4-0 and 9 1/2" gauge.

I have vivid memories of viewing the collection in about 1962 in the North Walpole yard and riding behind Rahway Valley 15 out of Keene, NH.
Also recall seeing NKP 759 shortly after it arrived, her numbers and lettering still whitelined.

No change in the situation with the Porter in Newbury, MA. But there's also Simons Wrecking #6, an Alco 0-4-0T, purportedly stored across the street from Clark's Trading Post in NH.

Hello

As of around 1998 or so the park engine was stored, dismantled and in poor shape under the Steamtown office building off South Washingtin Avenue. It was dumped in several metal crates when I saw it.

Thanks Dave, I had figured it might have been auctioned off. Last I saw it was just prior to NPS. It was stored in a baggage car, probably the way it came down from Vermont.

The 0-6-0, No.4 built 1911 by Baldwin for Eastern Gas & Fuel in Everitt, Mass. The engine is now on display in Gorham, NH lettered Grand Trunk and numbered 7531. From the 1971 Steamtown roster, it mentions that the tender came from Boston & Maine Mogul #1435. Can someone verify?

The 1971 Steamtown roster listed No.314, 4-6-0, one of the oldest locomotives in the Steamtown collection. No. 314 built by Cooke in 1892. Now on display in Galveston, Texas - Texas & New Orleans No. 314.
No. 314 came to Steamtown via the Vermillion Sugar Co. in Louisiana where Steamtown's No. 737, 4-4-0, also served. No. 737 is now in Portola?

No. 737 is now in

For now. Last week, the Feather River Railroad Society announce that they have traded the 737 to a developing agricultural museum outside Merced, CA. In exchange, the Portola group will be getting former Western Pacific 0-6-0 #165, presently stored at the Niles Canyon Rwy. Sounds complicated? It is!
