Hi John,

My faux pas-I believe you are correct. The Lykens Valley date should be 1982 instead of 1972, a typo.

Both of Jack Showalters's CP G-5's are stored in Staunton, Va. I don't believe there is such a place as Stanton WV. Gary

Another minor correction, Kurt. In Virginia it's Alleghany (with an h, unlike Pennsylvania and W. Maryland). Both the 1238 and 1286 last operated with Virginia Central on their tenders.

#16 used to reside at the end of my street here in Brooklyn for many years after she was retired in 1962. I am glad she's getting the good attention she needs. Alot of interesting stories have been told about when she was getting saved a while back.

According to the information included in George Hart's roster in this thread, the GE 44 Ton locomotive was not ex-Western Maryland 76.

According to Mr. Hart, the build date and number for #10 was 08/46 28503. The corresponding data for WM 76 is 08/43 17935.

WM 76 was sold to U.S. Plywood in September 1964. I don't know how long it remained there. It is currently in Arkville, NY on the Delaware and Ulster Railride. If anyone can help me fill in the years between U.S. Plywood and D&U I would like to hear from you.

An email from Wayne Laepple this morning confirms my memory that WM 76 was at Lykens Valley around or sometime after 1980. He remembers it comming after the 10 but I seem to recall 76 being the first 44 tonner on LKVY. I can find nothing in my records refering to either of these engines so I am not sure of the time frame.

Thanks for all the links and their information. I didn't realize that so many of the BEDT steamers were still around. (I do know that the NYD 44+ tonners didn't fare as well; what, one out of five?)

Talking of BEDT #16...I drove over to the Riverhead Yard and Railroad Museum of Long Island today and snapped this picture of it for everyone to see who hasn't been out to Riverhead at all, or recently. It's in sorry shape cosmetically, but inside it seems to be pretty intact from what I heard and the boiler is in decent shape too. The museum was very empty today, except for what looked like a camp tour. I managed to take pictures before any people got in the way. Up at Frank Field's 16" gauge railroad in Greenport, there were nearly 50 people and 20+ cars in the lot, not to mention gravel-kicking little kids and other things. As we parked our car at Claudio's Wharf just after noon, the horn from the southbound Scoot could be heard. I did not see it to be able to count the cars or anything. We've been seeing quite a few DM30s on our branch recently, don't know what was pulling the Scoot today.

One of my favorite pictures of my dad's. And to think my mom was waiting somewhere nearby, as they were on their honeymoon!

At the risk of having my head snapped off, I would assert that this is exactly why museums need some operating piece of equipment (preferably steam). People will come to what is unusual and attractive. In my opinion - and it is just that- folks will bring Junior out to see a small steamr puff up and down 300 feet of track with a caboose behind it. How cost effective? Errrr...I don't know (but I'm sure I'll hear it!)
How is the RRM of LI coming toward getting their G5 to a shop?

I posted a picture I took of the #39 yesterday as well on RailroadForums.com (photo gallery, under steam and tourist railroads or whatever). I'm not home and on dialup, I can't get the site to work right now so I can't get a direct link. I'll try later but it shouldn't be hard to find given I just posted it yesterday. Sorry shape, and they've supposedly been talking about restoring it for years. Now they do have the green, but the work hasn't started or been given to a specific contractor to perform the overhaul. They're supposed to be taking bids on that soon.

Keep Steaming,
Ed Kelley
