New Saratoga-North Creek train line gets closer
Corinth to buy rail section with grants

BY LEE COLEMAN Gazette Reporter

The vision of a special train taking skiers and tourists from
Saratoga Springs to North Creek in Warren County is getting closer
to reality, officials said Tuesday.
In fact, if the purchase by Corinth of 16 miles of railroad line
between Saratoga Springs and Corinth is completed this spring, as
officials expect, a scenic train could start making the 56-mile trip
in October.
"We are so close we can almost taste it," said Jon "Jack" Kelley,
senior vice president of the Saratoga Economic Development Corp.
Warren County, using millions of dollars in federal
transportation grants, has improved about 70 percent of the railroad
line between Corinth and North Creek.
Pat Beland, the Warren County parks and recreation director, said
Tuesday he expects contractors will complete renovating the final 30
percent of the track this spring and summer. `We are so close we
The town of Corinth is going through the final negotiations to
buy 16 miles of track between Corinth and Saratoga Springs from
Canadian Pacific Railway, said town Supervisor Richard Lucia.
The town, through the Corinth Industrial Development Agency, is
using federal and state grants to pay $2 million for the rail line.
"It's getting closer and will be done within 60 days," Lucia said.
Lucia said the town wants to preserve the rail line so it can
still connect to the spur that goes into the former International
Paper Co. mill on Palmer Avenue.
IP closed the mill more than two years ago after more than 100
years of papermaking. The town and village want to attract new
industry to the 300-acre IP site.
The secondary goal is the scenic train, which would go from
Saratoga Springs to North Creek, where the state's Gore Mountain Ski
Center is located, along with white water rafting and canoeing
venues.
"CP Rail threatened to tear it up," Lucia said of the track that
was used by International Paper's Hudson River mill when it was in
operation. He said the welded rail track used for the line is "worth
a lot of money."
Lucia said no town tax money is involved in the rail line
purchase.
Kelley, of the SEDC, which has been helping coordinate the
twocounty scenic train project for years, said as the railroad
tracks are upgraded to a "passenger grade," officials will be
accepting proposals from firms or individuals who want to operate
the scenic train line.
"We are looking for world-class operators," Kelley said.
A nonprofit organization has been running a scenic train for the
8-mile route from North Creek south to the hamlet of Riparius for
six years. The scenic route goes along the upper Hudson River.
"That's a world class run," Kelley said of the rail line from
Saratoga Springs to North Creek.

Hope that it works out. Based on what I've heard, they would need PTC and qualifications for CP to reach the boarding point.

Thanks for the update, Bob. I did a double take when I saw your name on RYPN. It's nice to see!

Of course, the first thing I thought of is, "what's going happen to that D&H milk car up there?"

Looks like an old post...2005??? Plus the IP papermill in Corinth closed in 2002 so it would seem the article is from 2005 even though the article is not dated. The UHRR started in 1999, so the 6 year comment about the operator infers 2005 as well.

It does look like an old post . . . only six years for the plan to come to fruition! Hopefully the S&NC plan will actually happen.

Maybe they do. What I noted on RR.net is that the paint scheme that will be applied to the BL2s is following the lines of the original BAR scheme (or it at least looks like it) and the colors were replaced with colors from the D&H pallet. On paper, anything would make those beauties look good. Having missed the B&M BL2s by almost a lifetime, I'm seeing that there are a fair number of BAR locomotives that have been re-done for another road. In relation to that certain F3 pair, the F3B is former B&M 4268b that was backdated to look like a F3B. Just a fun fact to make someone go "huh, I didn't know that".

The UHRR did run through October 2010 but lost the contract to Iowa Pacific. They did operate further south last summer, Hadley to Corinth, after getting the ex SIRT S2 821.

Classy domes, but those LIRR multilevels are not exactly typical daisy picker material. Maybe they are for the ski train concept (a people mover, rather than a tourist ride)? Given the track record of these guys, I expect even a modern commuter coach will become something interesting... Rob

Rumor has it that the 2 ALCO switchers will be kept for use there and that they may look at a pair of FPA-4's. Unknown where those may come from.

North Creek trains to run another five years
By Eric Anderson on March 2, 2016 at 9:09 AM

The Glens Falls Post-Star is reporting that Warren County and the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad have reached a new five-year contract that will continue train service along the line from Saratoga Springs to North Creek. The terms are identical to the previous contract, which required the railroad, a unit of Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, to pay Warren County $81,000 a year.

The Post-Star said that Ed Ellis, Iowa Pacific’s president, attended a meeting Monday of the supervisors and told them the railroad had paid $6 million in salaries to local workers over the previous five years and spent $13 million on local goods and services.

Bike trail, anyone?

Supervisors question railroad's future after snow train cancellation
DON LEHMAN dlehman@poststar.com Jan 21, 2017

At least one Warren County supervisor is advocating for the county to take another look at potentially using the county-owned rail line for a bike trail after the operator of a tourist train on the line cancelled its winter trains for the second year in a row.

Lake Luzerne Supervisor Gene Merlino, chairman of the county board’s Tourism Committee, said Friday at a Board of Supervisors meeting that he was “really disappointed” at Saratoga & North Creek Railway’s last-minute cancellation of its winter trains.

“If they’re not going to do the snow train, we need to know before January,” he said. “We have to know what’s going on.”

Merlino pointed out that the railroad’s plans to run winter trains resulted in the train track right-of-way being off limits for snowmobile trails that had used them for years during the winter. The railroad operator that pre-dated SNCRR did not run winter trains, so the track area had become part of the snowmobile trail system, and it was frustrating that no trails were running but snowmobilers could no longer use the right-of-way.

Two bicycling groups proposed in 2015 that the 88-mile stretch of rails between Saratoga County and Tahawus be turned into a bike trail. Many bike trails around the country were abandoned rail lines.

Warren County instead renewed its contract with SNCRR parent company Iowa Pacific Holdings for five years, running until 2021...
