A story in today's Philadelphia Inquirer, part of a far larger series on Philly's massive campaign against illegal trucks, highlights the problems of moving historic equipment on road trailers. In this instance, it was a SEPTA PCC car being transported to Brookville Locomotive for refurbishment:

They got off easy. In the mid-1980s, the Wilmington & Western trucked PRR 0-6-0 60 from the Pittsburgh area to Wilmington, and along the way the truckers (real pros that also moved SR Ps-4 1401 into the Smithsonian) racked up over $10,000 in still-disputed overweight fines (basically, the police and the scales came up with weights that would have been more appropriate for a PRR Mikado or Decapod). In another instance, a diesel being moved from one operation to another in Pennsylvania was caught by the police as the jerrybuilt trailer set-up started coming apart on the highway (burning through the axle bearings, as I heard), again with heavy fines.
