 Post subject: B&HS #250 at Edaville *PIC*

This pic comes from Reinhard Wohlgemuth's "Edaville News" site. #250 has been
sand-blasted & primed and is ready for paint. Although she won't be running anytime soon, it's nice to see her getting some attention. No word yet as to which paint scheme she'll wear.

Wow, that's a real pretty locomotive! Can you provide some details, like when built, who built her, boiler pressure, driver diamter etc. Is it standard gauge? Any info would be great.

#250 is a standard gauge Baldwin 2-6-2, built in 1926 for the Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern. Sold around 1962-3 to the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern, and last under steam on the Wolfeboro RR in New Hampshire around 1980-1. 60" drivers(?),
possibly someone else can confirm...
She is now displayed at Edaville Railroad in S.Carver, Mass. where this cosmetic restoration is underway.

Do you suppose they protected the running gear from the grit? If they did not and the engine is later moved, it can damage bearings and other moving surfaces.

I recall riding behind her in Sept 1984 from Wolfeboro to Sanbornville. After the Wolfeboro shut down, she resided at the Hobo RR in N Woodstock NH. Being a 2-6-2, I suppose she was perfect for tip toeing on the rough tracked grades of Cotton Valley.
It was a real treat riding in B and M Laconia built wood cars and the scent of coal smoke in the air with foliage to boot. Too bad my kids missed this one...

Former Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern RR 2-6-2 250 does indeed have 60 inch drivers. The cylinders are 20 x 24. I don't recall the boiler pressure, probably the operating pressure was around 180 psi.

250 was built in May 1926 for the B&HS and retired by that Mississippi shortline in October 1961. She was acquired by the WK&S (tourist) RR at Kempton, PA in September 1963. 250 was used on the WK&S during the mid and late 1960's.

She was sold to the late Mr. Don Hallock in 1972 and moved to the Wolfeboro RR in NH. 250 hauled the Wolfeboro's tourist trains during the mid and late 1970's (going out of service around 1980 sounds correct). During her later years at Wolfeboro she operated with her present (as seen today at Edaville) long tender, which I was told came from an ex-MEC steam pile driver. I'm not sure what happened to her original tender (see photo link), but it developed leaks at Wolfeboro.

The Clarks bought 250 after the Wolfeboro closed and displayed the engine at the Hobo Railroad in NH. The locomotive was moved to Concord, NH and acquired by Mr. Jack Flagg (her present owner) and, of course, more recently moved to Edaville for display.

See the below link for a photo of 250 on the B&HS in Mississippi. I understand Mr. Flagg is deciding on a paint scheme for 250--I vote for this one!!

Jim,

The last time I was at Edaville a year or so ago, their commuter Diesel, MARTA, I think, was painted in Sante Fe Super Chief. So I doubt that there will be a historic scheme in the 2-6-2.
