Post subject: Could a Southern Crescent of the 1970's Be Recreated?
PostPosted: Mon May 31, 1999 8:49 am

In perusing the previous series of posts about switchers, mention was made of three surviving Southern Railway E-8's; #'s 6900 at Spencer, 6901 at SERM outside Atlanta, and 6914 at TVRM in Chattanooga. I know that two of these institutions own several sleeping cars from the Southern Crescent, the question arises, what else is left? When the Southern Crescent was turned over to Amtrak in 1979, three of the four Crescent series sleeper lounges were around, namely Crescent Moon, Harbor and City (sister Crescent Shores was destroyed in a wreck in November, 1978). For those of you who don't remember them, they had two drawing rooms, and a master room with shower. Are any of them still around. I know a number of lightweight coaches are surviving. Also are there any of the streamlined dining cars left? What I am suggesting is that a rotating exhibit of a complete Southern Crescent set among the three museums might tell the story better than various cars and locomotives sitting around various parts of their respective museums. I have been to Spencer and NCTM in the last 3 months, and greatly respect what both institutions have done. I haven't been to TVRM in almost 15 years, and so I don't know what equipment they have on hand. What do you all think? I'm looking forward to reading your responses.
it could be done; right now the royal arch (an 11-doublebedroom sleeper) and catawba river (10-6 sleeper) are on the grounds and both could be made roadworthy; during 1996 for some special events we put them together with some other SR heavyweight equipment and 6900/6133 back to back to approximate a salisbury-asheville train; i think most of the ex-SR budd-built diners are still on AMT and last i heard were gonna continue onward and upward!
anyway, it's defintely an idea to strive for; i don't want to speak for the others but i think we're locked into the struggle for the back shop for the next few years so emphasis will have to stay there (and SR 542 also will have to bide its time, unless one of you guys beats up on regis for the $1m)
You may want to visit www.railenterprises.com. They have 6 ACF coaches, 11 bedroom sleepers Royal Palm and Royal Court, bedroom/lounge car Cresent Harbor, and boat-observation Royal Palace currently for sale, with pictures and other data available here. The big question is, however, where are these cars presently located, and how did they get here from the Southern?
P.S.
I think that this is a great idea!!!
UJ205@hotmail.com
