Some great photos of the shortline Cliffside RR in North Carolina on a community website. Photos of all the engines, etc., with 26 photos of 2-8-0 No. 40 alone (its now at New Hope, PA). Two Cliffside steamers survived, but the RR was closed (and scrapped, I'm told) in the late-1980s after the local cotton mill closed.

It was about the late '80's when I went there with Hillman, O'Toole and others in an effort to track down any remains of the Glover built 2-6-2T which was their passenger / commuter power. It had been rumored that the frames were rusting away on the property.

Turns out that was just legend but we did manage to visit the enginehouse and there was one diesel locomotive and a wood framed Fairmont speeder in residence then. A former employee had been retained as watchman for the property and he indicated the locomotive had been disposed of but he was taking the Fairmont for himself.

I wish I could find the pictures. Assume the railroad was torn up shortly thereafter.

My wife lived in a house in this mill town until the age of five (1949 - 54) and never knew there was a map as well. We think we have located her house on it and want to thank you for calling it to our attention. She has some vague memories of the train, but really remembers how the mill would turn the water in the river a variety of colors when they disposed of (dumped) the dies used for products they made. The good old days?

In the early 90's I used to fire an alumnus of the Cliffside Railroad family--2-8-0 No. 40 now operating on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad. She is a superb "stock" Baldwin product worthy of the Cliffside's colorful heritage.
