You're correct. It's the running gear and valve gear from one side of a C&EI Atlantic. The cylinder is partially cut away. But there's nothing of the frame or boiler. It's an excellent display, since the wheels turn and operate the valve gear, showing how the whole system works. Easier to understand than the cutoff diagrams in textbooks.

This has been an interesting thread. I have all of the ones mentioned in my database; but I was not aware that some had been sectioned.

Here is what I have to date:

1. Spang Chalfont 0-6-0 #8 at Steamtown, as previously mentioned.

2. The one mentioned at the Ontario Science Center, Toronto must be "Gertrude", Hunslet 995/1909. An ex-Penryhn slate quarry engine, there are several of these preserved.

3. "ELLERMAN LINES", BR #35029 at York, as previously mentioned.

4. SBB 0-6-0 rack tank #1063 at the Swiss National Transport Museum, Luzern. Two other examples, one on static exhibit, the other operational, also remain.

5. VR (Finish Railways) 4-6-2 #1003 at the museum in Haapamäki, Finland. There is/was a large dump of locomotives at Haapamäki (remains of the "strategic reserve"), this locomotive was probably from that dump.

6. I assume the SNCF 4-6-4 sectioned at the French National Railway Museum, Mulhouse is 232U 1. It is a four cylinder locomotive, if that helps.

7. Without more details, I don't know which one at the Transport Museum, Nürnberg, Germany is sectioned.

8. PKP (ex-DR) 4-4-0 #Pd5-17 at the Railway High School, W-wa, Poland.

9. Without more details, I don't know which one at the RENFE Museum, Madrid is sectioned.

9. JNR 2-4-0T #110 at Ohme (Oume) Railway Park, Tokyo, Japan.

10. JNR 0-6-6-0 #9856 at the Tokyo Transport Museum, Tokyo, Japan.

11. NSR 0-4-0T #48 (Dubs 2787/1891) at the New Delhi Railway Museum, New Delhi, India.

12. CMEF 2-6-0 #220 (Baldwin 37711/1912) at the Roundhouse, Sao Joao del Rei, Brazil.

Along with a Trolley and some diesels, there is a sectioned Tasker Steam Tractor at the Milestones Museum, Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK; and a sectioned Worthington duplex pump at the Puffing Billy Museum, Menzies Creek, VIC, Australia.

One of my favorite museum exhibits was the large display of sectioned aircraft engines at the Naval Air Museum in Pensecola, Florida. You could turn some of them, and watch the parts in action.

An entire collection of sectioned steam appliances was also showcased at Steamtown during the convention. I assume they were from there but might be mistaken.

In Volume one of Preserved Steam Locomotives of Western Europe there are two sectioned locos listed for Nuremberg. I remember seeing the Bavarian #4515, an 0-4-0WT built for one man operation on light branch line trains. Also listed is "Nordgau," an outside frame, two cylinder 2-4-0 built in 1853 as Bavarian class BV by Maffei, c/n 151. A photo in the book seems to show this loco at the Munich museum as well. In the French section of this book it lists Nord four cylinder 4-6-4 #3.1101 that had been sectioned and exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1937, and was then being held for the future Mulhouse museum. This loco was built in 1911 to a de Glehn-du Bousquet compound design. The book was published in 1971 and I can't lay hands on my photos from visiting so someone else will have to confirm which loco is sectioned and on exhibit now.

Ron,

Thanks. NORD 3.1101 is indeed at Mulhouse; someone mentioned it was a SNCF locomotive; so I assumed it was 232U 1. Thanks for clearing that up.

The one in the Deutsches Museum, Munich is not "Nordgau", but KBayStsB 2-4-0 #1000 (Maffei 1000/1874) yet another sectioned locomotive.

I certainly have no objection in principle. Sections make great teaching tools, and compelling displays. It's actually something that I would have loved as a little kid, and would very much like to see even now. I was just currious who got to be the subject of the display. If you walk into the museum to see the sectioned cadaver, it's good to know if it was a personal friend or not.

Sincerely,
David Ackerman
