Post subject: Possible Grants for Restoration
PostPosted: Thu Dec 05, 2002 2:45 pm

I am with the Ontario-Walworth Rotary and we are trying to find places that might have grant money available for the Restroarion of the Ontario Train Station in Ontario, NY. The idea of the project is to restore the train station for the historic purposes. Possibly use it at the Town's museum. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mark Wyse, Ontario-Walworth Rotary

Punch "TEA-21" into your search engine you use on the web. TEA-21 is "Transportation Enhancement Act" and 21 is the part covering things like depots. If your state's transportation arm has a web site, look for a TEA rep. There is money out there from the Fed for projects like this but you have to file early and dot all the "I"s and cross all the "T"s.
Punch in "National Trust for Historic Preservation" and use their web site as a tool.
Luck to you.

In New York State at least, there won't be another Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) application window until some time after the TEA-21 bill is reauthorized in September 2003. All TEP money in the initial six year TEA-21 authorization is allocated already. I suggest that you contact your congressman and 'sell' your project to him. He might find other ways to pry loose federal money.

Also, contact your regional NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. They administer grants and can help with determining if your building is eligible for the National Register if it isn't listed already.

If your interest includes commercial (re)development of the station or the area around it, you might get some useful information from the Great American Station Foundation, previously referenced on this discussion board. I believe their Internnet Site is www.stationfoundation.org.
