He will generally be out of the office until Jan. 2nd. You can leave him voice mail at 717-687-8421, or e-mail me, and I will forward it to him.

Have Ya'll considered leasing or buying another engine, like the engine sitting in New Orleans from the defunct Big Easy Steam Train (1744?)
Is there anything wrong with it?

Ive been wondering the status/condition of this engine anyway. I saw it on its last day after the check valve stuck open.

Supposedly Rio Grande Pacific wants $350,000 for 1744.

Didn't I read that the Victoria SP 2-8-2 might be available or at least was going to be cosmetically restored? Maybe the Austin folks could do a cosmetic job on the Victoria engine in exchange for swapping out that locomotive's cylinder saddle? It would be a big job, but better than a dead 786.

That ain't a bad deal if she's street legal (part 230). Especially after a certain eastern tourist railroad reportedly paid almost that much for a total basket case (requiring about half the boiler replaced) a couple of years ago.

That was under brief consideration for a short time; however the 771's cylinder saddle is slightly different due to no steam passages for the feedwater heater(786 has one,771 does not)plus you never know what conditio her saddle is in even if it would work..........

Alan:

Because of our operating requirements, leasing an available locomotive with the power we need is just not available. We operate with 9-10 car trains on a ruling 2% grade,so we need a pretty good sized locomotive to pull our trains w/o diesel assistance. The 1744 is a good locomotive, but curently unavailable to us.
