I was wondering what the current cost is for a new treated wood railroad tie. Also what is the cost for a relay tie in near new condition? what are the cost benefits of used vs new? what are the negatives? any and all comments are appreciated

I just ordered 4 truck loads for the Lorain & West virginia of premuim 100 % end plated ties @ 24.10 each delivered. I was offered s-hooked @ 23.10 for a truck load. I also ordered a truck load for my day job these are industrial grades and they were 22.10 each delivered. these prices are all for 6x8's. A truck load of 6x8's is 250 ties.
The biggest problem with relays are:
1: If they are not pluged as soon as they are removed water will get in and they won't hold the spike near as long.
2: Labor for installtion is the same.
3: Most relay sellers put the best ties on the outside of the bundle. Who know's what you get when you cut the bundle open.
4: Do you REALLY know how long they were in service and in what envoirment???
5: If you buy new chances are they are fresh out of the manufactureing process, this ='s Maxium life.
6: We've bought relays in the past and had so so luck. some better some junk in the center of the bundle. We've never had a problem with new.
I belive you will find that in the long run new is better.
Now all of this depends on your use. display track, storage track, once in a while use or regular passenger use. If your runing trains with lots of lawsuits, Oh I'm sorry passengers the best way is new.
