 Post subject: Winter Shop Work

The WW&F Railway Museum's winter shop work is a "Class 5" rebuild of our operating steam engine, 0-4-4RT #10. The engine is being extensively dismantled for some major work. Remember that this two-foot gauge, and the engine weighs about 12 ton.

The cab has already been removed and will be rebuilt in an historic WW&F style, meaning that the door will be moved back just in front of the tender and the side windows will be lengthened. The front end doors will be reworked to open to the outside. The cab will also be given more head room (not historic but practical).

Hopefully this weekend the tender will be lifted from the frame, and the boiler as well.

When reassembled, the tender will be moved forward a few inches (for weight redistribution). The boiler attachment on the firebox end is also off center slightly, so that needs fixing too on reassembly.

Once the boiler is off, the drivers will be removed for turning (off site). The running gear will be trued up. The cab floor will get replaced. The end beam will likely get replaced. The frame will be cleaned and magnafluxed.

Those of you familiar with the engine know of the interesting way Edaville dealt with the gauge conversion, from 30" gauge cylinders to 24" drivers, by giving the drive rods a three inch "L". This will be corrected with longer pins on the drivewheels and straight drive rods.

The rear truck frame has some cracks that will be replaced with a new casting.

We should be getting new springs.

Have I forgotten anything? I don't think so.

Re-assembly is expected to take place in late spring. At the end of it all we'll have a completely rebuilt locomotive that should get us through until the #9 is restored to service.

Fortunately our new machine shop has heat! Much better than the retubing a couple years back in the winter cold of an uninsulated shop bay.

that's fantastic, what a laundry list.
I guess Jason wasn't kidding when he said that the cab was "coming off" the day after the Victorian Christmas runs!
Speaking of which, any chance you could post a pic of this years event?

Well the cab didn't quite come off the day after. He drained the engine the day after and winterized it, and the following Saturday the wiring was removed. Marcel removed the cab New Year's Day.

As to pictures from Victorian Christmas....there wasn't any snow so it didn't look very Christmasy (looks very much like mid-summer) so I didn't think anyone would be interested. I'll see if I can find some.
