I keep seeing the promos on TNT for the movie Monte Walsh staring Tom Selleck.
Who'd engine and RR is used in the film?
They show it alot in the ads.

I couldn't tell by looking at the commercial, but it appeared to have a center-mounted headlight with some kind of cover over it, and an overly festooned oil-lamp highmounted for the film as "backdating."

Yes, it sure looked like a covered-up headlight - kinda hokey, it seems.

Credits at the end of the movie regarding the railroad: “The Alberta Railway Museum” and “The Central Western Railway Corporation (Lakeland & Waterways Division).” Internet Movie Data Base (imdb.com) lists filming locations as Longview and Redwater, Alberta, Canada. The locomotive is a 4-6-0 (ten wheeler), with number 1392 - maybe the real number, or maybe just put on for the movie. Maybe someone else can go from this to determine more details on the actual train/railroad used.

After the cowboys tear off the stack, the engineer says he doesn’t know what to do with the locomotive because he can’t get a decent draft without the stack, and “can’t budge the #$%^ thing.” Wouldn’t it still be possible to produce enough steam to at least “budge” it down the track for a ways? Minor nit-picking, of course, but I’m just curious.

Here is a link to their (Alberta Railway Museum)website, which states that the 1392 was used in the Monte Walsh film.
