 Post subject: "Orphaned" RTY Equipment
PostPosted: Mon Jan 20, 2003 11:12 am

In the late 1970s, the following equipment owned by Railways to Yesteryear was reportedly stored at McHugh Brothers Heavy Hauling in Penndel, Pa.:

1. A small, boxy Mack locomotive, formerly straight-electric, later gasoline-powered, No. 4 from Missouri (I think this is the 2nd unrestored Mack at WK&S less trucks in Kempton, Pa.);
2. A wooden electric box-motor No. 26 named "Courtlands" from the Cornwall Street Railway in Ontario;
3. A yellow and green ex-RDG steel caboose No. 92830;
4. Ex-Red Arrow center door trolley car No. 61

Does anybody know where are these pieces located now?

Kurt,
I believe #92830 also went to the WK&S.

I have a photo posted from a contributor that was taken in 1991.

Yes, this is the RTY Mack. It also visited the NH&I and (while still in working condition) was used on the EBT's Mount Union dual-gauge yard trackage to switch out standard gauge gons loaded with surplus EBT hoppers bound for (I think) the WP&Y. BTW, Mack Trucks put together only 2 of these boxcabs--both for their own plant-switching use. They were earlier straight electric locomotives that Mack outfitted (c.1939) with gasoline engines and generators. IIRC, the trucks from both Macks have been sold for use by some traction group(??). The other Mack (WK&S 35, long OOS at Kempton) sits now on freight car trucks.

Not sure. Is/was this the box motor carbody that was (still is??) at the former lumber yard site at Ringoes on the BR&W.

IIRC this former RDG steel caboose is the one (the steel one, newer restoration) also at the WK&S. Not sure, but IIRC, McHugh picked it up from a town (I'm thinking Alburtis, PA) who wanted it moved from their park. Could be wrong, but I think that's story and this is the same caboose.

Not sure, but I think this is/was also at Ringoes. An ex-Red Arrow center door car--lettered for the former Princeton-Trenton Traction Co. "Fast Line" (BTW, whose long-gone ROW runs behind my house)--was/is at the lumber yard site. I say "was" because I'm unsure if these two carbodies are still at Ringoes.

WK&S sent the turcks north to trolley group in Shelburne Falls, MA for use.

I have wondered about the RDG hacks once displayed in Alburtis and in Sinking Spring. I think you may be right about Alburtis.

Railways To Yesterday Inc., operators of the Rockhill Trolley Museum in Rockhill Furnace (next to the East Broad Top Railroad) was the owner of all the equipment that Kurt mentioned. We currently own the centerdoor trolleycar 61. The rest now have new homes. The equipment was stored at Penndel in McHugh yard until 1986 when we moved it or deaccessed it.

Yes this locomotive body is now at Kempton as I saw it in the summer of 2002. It was donated to RTY by Mack in 1968 and was used at the museum on occasion and also at the EBT Mt. Union yards as was mentioned. It was taken to New Hope for a complete rebuilding which unforunately did not happen. I don't know if it ever operated in New Hope. It would be interesting to see pictures of it in operation there if it ever did. From what I have been told by members of our museum who were involved in the operation of the unit while in Rockhill, it was a very troublesome locomotive to keep operating. RTY donated the body and engines to the WK&S to help keep their operating Mack locomotive running. RTY kept the trucks and we still have them in storage. The trucks from the Mack that had been operating at Kempton went to the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum for the restoration of car 10 there.

> 2. A wooden electric box-motor No. 26 named

This frieght motor was acquired by the museum in 1972 originally for parts to restore another car at the museum. It resided in Penndel until 1986 when a private indivdual purchased the car as he did not want to see the car scrapped. It was moved to Topton PA (Where Ed Blossom was located)and it was some time later donated to the Electric City Trolley Museum. It is still in Topton.

> 3. A yellow and green ex-RDG steel caboose
> No. 92830;

This caboose was displayd in the Emmaus Community Park through the efforts of former Reading Railroad conductor Forrest Trittenbach, who lived in Emmaus. It was acquired by RTY in 1972 as vandalism was becoming an issue withthe caboose in the park. The museum had the thought of turning it into a bunkhouse for volunteer workers to stay overnight in. It was moved to Penndel so some of the eastern PA members of the museum could go there to work on the equipment without driving to south central PA. Unfortunatly this plan never realy worked out and the car was ultimately donated to the WK&S Kempton where the volunteers there have done a very nice job of restoring the car to service.

> 4. Ex-Red Arrow center door trolley car No.

This car was acquired by the museum in 1971 and was again stored at Penndel with the thought of restoration work being performed there, which unfornatly again did not happen. The car has been stored indoors since 1992 in our carbarn 2. The trucks for this car have been partially regauged. The car is a fine example of what happens when you leave a piece of equipment outdoors in the weather for 20 years. We did keep it covered with tarps but they are not the final answer. The car is complete and restorable, just waiting the time, money and volunteers. The same problems all other museums have.

Actually, the carbody that was at Ringoes (it is still there) was that of Philadelphia snow sweeper #C-122, built by Brill in 1923. I believe it is owned by the BR&W and used as a bunkhouse.

This car was Red Arrow #63. Interestingly, it was only ever painted for the Fast Line on one side; the other side kept most of its Red Arrow lettering. The carbody (I'm not sure where the trucks went - I don't think it had them at Ringoes) was sold at some point to a private owner near Columbus, Ohio, who still owns the car; it is stored on a farm on a flatbed truck trailer. The photo below was taken in 2001, and shows the side of the car that was never completely painted for the Fast Line.

I believe the trucks from centerdoor car 63 were the ones acquired by the Magee Museum in Bloomsburg for use under New York State Rys. car 157. This car is now at the New York Museum of Transportation. I am assuming the trucks went wiith the car after Magee was flooded out.

I Really Like The Mack Truck Switcher (WK&S # 35) At Kempton, PA. Will The WK&S Get The Trucks Back To Make # 35 Operable? What Was The Reason To The Sale? Thanks!

 Post subject: Equipment at Ringoes: Roster?
PostPosted: Tue Jan 21, 2003 11:30 pm

Can somebody (Joel, Jim, Rob et al) identify the current locations of the trolleys formerly at Ringoes, NJ? Sorry if I am repeating previous threads, I just want all the info in the same place. Here is my list from 1980:

No. 10, wooden semi-convertible double-end clerestory-roof interurban passenger car, Brill 1904. Ex-North Branch Transit (Bloomsburg, Pa. area) No. 10. Less trucks.

No. 22, steel-center door interurban passenger car, simulating scrapped Trenton-Princeton Traction car No. 22 (actually Red Arrow 63, built by Brill, 1925)

No. 2651, wooden modified deck-roof double-end drop platform suburban passenger car, built at Public Service Plank Rd. shops, Newark, 1917 under license from Cincinnati Car.

No. C-122, wooden double-truck double end snow sweeper, Brill 1923. Ex-SEPTA, PTC, PRT C-122. Parts were used to restore 2651. (Still at Ringoes, used as private residence by Greg Il?)

No. S-35, single truck double end snow sweeper, Russell 1920. Ex-Toronto Transit S-35 until 1974, ex-Third Ave. Ry. (New York City) 83 until 1948, ex-Trenton & Mercer Co. 53 until 1935. Parts were used to restored 10.

Am I missing any cars? Why were these cars brought to Ringoes, and when? Any plans to run them on the BR&W? I believe the principles were Frank Miklos and Tony Hall. When did the cars leave?

Always curious,
K.R. Bell

Joel,

Here is a pic of NYS 157 at the NYMT with its Brill trucks(broad gauge). It has had these trucks since I came to Rochester in 1989. However, the car was recently jacked up and has had a new set of standard gauge Baldwin trucks installed. More info on the truck changeout can be found in the recent editions of their newsletter, the HEADEND, available on their website under NYMT Journal.

That is all I know of the history of 157.

Until later,
Chris

This car is now at Phillipsburg being worked at the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians Museum By the North Jersey trolley group.

Information on about 2,000 surviving electric cars (including all of the cars that were at Ringoes) can be found at the below website. Unfortunately you cannot run a search on BR&W equipment because the stuff at Ringoes was owned by several different groups and private owners, but since you know the cars' numbers and original operators you'll be able to find them all.
