Found this on ABPR. Virginia Power Alco switcher at Hopewell, VA. Looks like an S3, and out of service. Potential donation?

One source says this is former Boston & Maine S3 #1173.

Just curious what that source is? There are a number of disused industrial locomotives like this that have a past from a common carrier. Industries, more than railroads, seem inclined to donate them. Though they're not beauty queens, some might make decent displays in front of the ubiquitous hometown depot projects, especially if one can determine their lineage.

The actual traceable source is the builders plate on the unit.

Several other sources, including Loconotes (on-line, and older printed versions), The Short Line (various issues), DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE ROSTERS-The Railroad Magazine Series, and if I can find it, I'm sure there was something about it years ago in X2200.

I am the one who drove the photographer back to the plant, which is actually in Chester, VA, not Hopewell. We had just left the Hopewell area enroute to Collier Yard in Petersburg, when I decided to drive back to the plant, and see if anything was out and in position for photos. If you notice, he cut and paste the builders plate in the bottom right hand corner of the image. The serial number is traceable on many better B&M rosters. The image was shot with a digital camera.

One other note about the Chester Dominion Power plant, is that the center cab GE that they normally use for shoving the hoppers through the dumper, has been repainted from its VAPower colors, into a blue and white Dominion Power paint scheme.
