Does anyone know the status of Black River & Western No. 60? Is she expected to be back in service anytime soon? What work is needed to get her back in service?

Yes it appears that BR&W is repairing No. 60. See link to their website below.

Considering the scope of work needed to be done on 60, I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about it running this season. In addition to needing upgrade to meet current FRA boiler regs, the tender needs some serious work (the bottom of the tank is rusting through and needs major repair), and the tires need to be reprofiled.

Last I heard, the FRA may have condemned the drive wheels for being dished, and the only thing that will fix them is pulling them out from underneath the engine and sending them out to a shop with a wheel lathe capable of handling them.

Oh yeah... the drive pins and running gear were in need of attention back in the early 90's when the firebox was done. Those might need some work too. About the only thing done with the running gear was removal of the hard grease fittings, and changing them over to soft grease. BR&W also sold their alemite gun. Don't understand the logic behind that one... but it's their toy...

Just curious. Does anyone know if No. 60's drivers have been turned since its major overhaul in the Loveland enginehouse in 1958?

From what I recall... no. BR&W received the engine with what was basically a new set of tires. Long time BR&W employees/volunteers have said that 60 was GW's "orphan" amongst their Baldwins and spent a great deal of time in storage. As a result, the tires had little wear on them when they purchased the locomotive, and hadn't needed any reprofiling up until the firebox work done in the late 80's/early 90's. There's still plenty of material left on the tires, and BRW management has talked of pulling them out and sending them to Strasburg for quite some time. IIRC, they originally intended to get the firebox work done, get the locomotive running to increase passenger revenue, then do the drive pins, running gear, and wheels between five year inspections during an off season.

Those plans didn't work out, and now they're to the point where they absolutely need to be done.
