Water level indicator

Who has upgraded their tender to the new FRA regs adding water level indicators. Has anyone done anything different than just a plastic water column?

We used a pipe with holes drilled every 6 inches or so, I forgot the exact distance, it has been a while. Ours went right into the place where the original L&N one went.

We used sight-glasses and valves made by Ernst Flow Industries. They offer tons of different glasses and valves...also fusible plugs. The water tank sight-glass we went with has bronze valves and looks at home on the loco tank. The local FRA inspector was very happy with it. Our boiler backhead has two of their "reflex" style glasses rated for steam pressure. They have worked quite well.

At The Valley, we installed four little brass petcocks at varying levels at the front of the cistern adjacent to the coal pocket: simple, effective and cheap.

Same for Frisco 1630 at IRM--easy and cheap!
