Lakeside long ago

The first steam locomotive I ever saw in operation was this one, at Lakeside Amusement Park in Denver. Two of these 22-inch Cagney engines still run there today, though the park is said to be looking a bit sad now and the streamliner (an antique in itself) runs more often than the steamers. The Cagneys have run most every year since they came here and reportedly came originally from the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis.

And this one at Elitches Amusement Park, Lakeside's competitor in Denver. This one, probably 15-inch gauge, was long gone when I first visited in the 1950s, replaced by a Minature Train Company F3 streamliner. Lakeside is still in its original location, but Elitches moved to the old Colorado & Southern Rice Yard (7th Street Roundhouse) site near the Platte River a few years ago and is a modern Six Flags park.
