The roof of the Portsmouth roundhose is falling in. The brick sides have some serious cracks. It is the oldest part of the origional, which in earlier times made a half-circle. The next oldest portion, also brick, was adjacent to this portion and was torn down in the late fifties. The newest portion, wood and steel, was burned up in a fire in the war-years when a hostler tried to syphon some gas from a gas-electric car to circumvent gas-rationing. Two pacific P-2's were burnt in the conflagation, losing their cabs....They were back on the job shortly after sporting cabs from pre-war scrapped 2-8-0 K-8's. The city of Portsmouth would like to build a truck-route through a portion of the old yard, now owned by Guilford....(good luck!).....The roundhouse area is privately owned.....Turntable was still in, the last I knew. Was last used to turn "Unload this-side only" lumber cars. The tracks through Portsmouth are still active, served currently by a Guilford engine based at Rockingham Jct., 9 miles distant over the former Manchester to Portsmouth branch.
