You can read the first page of any TrainOrders subsection for free. It costs a subscription to post, go back further than those first pages, and/or see video, or photos larger than microscopic size.

Hi All
On Saturday July 26th, I just wanted to see what type of news was in the interchange of RYPN...
The site was so busy I had no chance,, I don't know what is going on with the web site, or ( Server) but it is not working...
Once the site becomes ( OVERWHELMED) with hits,, it is almost impossible to get on..
that is what I am experiencing with the website now.. I do not think I am the only one in the boat..
I do hope the Moderates can fix the problem,,, with the server,, ( WHY) is this happening????
RYPN is my First ( go to) before I go to any other railroad website,,, I don;t want to deal to opening ( facebook) to the RYPN website... I like the 1st webiste before Facebook...
I do hope the Moderators,, can resolve this problem,, of WHY so long of Wait,, just trying to get on.... Thank you for your time,, and Please resolve the problem,, Pat

As far as I can tell, it's not the amount of hits as bandwidth seems fine. The errors I had gotten were for the lack of disk space for the database. Low disk space and you'll slow to a crawl. No disk space and you can't read/write data, thus no functioning. I still manage a few websites so I know how this works.

The moderators can't fix this due to lack of access or control. Maybe it's being worked on. Dunno.

First time I've been able to get on here for a few days - the connection timed out every other time I tried, but it loaded very fast (back to normal) just now.
The UK Railfan forum WNXX has been shut down for the past few days due to Bot activity and it isn't clear whether it will be back.........

Clearly this site has a problem. I am nobody's tech expert, so I don't know what the answer is, but it probably is going to require either finding someone on here who is, or hiring someone who is. It may require asking those of us who have been on here regularly for a long time to donate towards securing this site so we don't lose everything on it, and that would be fine, as long as it doesn't drift into something really commercial and higher cost.

IF we still have a site owner / admin; then I would suggest that the site start using Cloudflare at the very least. Or we go with the TrainOrders route and require logins to read anything.

Cloudflare blocks me on every site its used on...

It's nothing against you personally, it's your service provider being blocked. If there were bad actors using that server, it's IP range is being blocked by Cloudflare for security.

I was also personally threatened with a lawsuit over posts on the Chaski Railfan Forum when I moderated that forum as a volunteer around the turn of the century. I was in college at the time and trying to find an entry point into railroad preservation, but I was so discouraged by those events that I walked away from the entire hobby/industry for over a decade.

When people ask why it is difficult to get the next generation involved in preservation, it's because of people like him.

While I can acknowledge his many accomplishments (mostly before I was even a teenager with few since) it is difficult to hold any feeling other than contempt for him in my heart. I aspire to be nothing like him.

I'll say it once again. I'll gladly take it over and host it if you'll switch to XenForo.
There are import scripts available.

It would look something like this:

This is part of what I talked about in other threads - AI companies stealing copyrighted material to train their AI without licensing or compensation.

That said, I highly doubt that they would target RyPN specifically but if their spiders are crawling randomly, ya never know....

The recent draft opinion by the copyright office says it definitely is infringement. However, the current administration is giddy over AI so it's not likely to be adopted or enforced. Not to mention the head of the copyright office getting canned.... Follow the money.

There are days when there is no problem logging on. Then there are days (like today) where it's extremely sluggish, and sometimes timing out.
