The Future Of Steam Railroading: BATTERIES?!?!?!?

No, this is NOT a very late April Fool's post.

The legions who have been attempting to preserve and sustain the character, attraction, and "living" aspects of steam locomotion have been facing challenge after challenge in the past decades: a diminishing of the knowledge necessary to keep steam running; increasing opposition to or expense in the use of coal, oil, or whatever fuels to fire them; and increasing droughts making even oil-fired steam a dangerous proposition (if not in actual risk, in appearances).

Now a commercial tourist rail operation in Britain--a country with critical drought and fire problems this year--has introduced an answer most of us would have considered a joke a decade ago:

Now I'm wondering if this is what the Colebrookdale RailRoad meant by announcing three weeks ago that they were going to make 5288 be "zero emissions."

Actually, the Swiss did zero emissions steam during WWII, converting a handful of small steam locomotives to take electricity from the catenary to power heating coils that provided the heat for steam generation. It was pretty strange, but it did work.

I don't think a 600V or 3000V catenary installation would be prudent here.........

In my opinion, that's preferable to the small industrial diesel or gas engines with which many steam outline amusment park locos have had fitted.

Steam Outline. It's an electric park train with nice special FX.

Nice but nothing ground breaking and it's not steam.
Chance has been doing electric CP Huntington's for years now.
This new one just has better fake steam.

Nobody is doing battery powered steam and unless something drastically changes in battery tech, nobody ever will. There's too much energy loss, the batteries would have to be massive.
