1949 Illinois Central Pass. Car for sale/donation

Check Ebay auction #2218642120; there's a 1949 Illinois Central passenger car in Mississippi that the person would sell or potentially donate to a charitable group. This is the third time the owner has tried to sell this car on Ebay and is now saying that if someone doesn't come forward to accept the donation the car is within weeks of being cut up for scrap. We can't use it up here in Wichita but perhaps someone out there can......

Good description and lots of photos. Sounds like they are really trying to find a good home for it. Question - did this car have stainless sheathing on the outside as-built?

Be very careful. Read the complete description. Not only have they slandered the good name of our friends at TVRM*, who most likely had a very legitimate reason for pulling out of the deal; but they are offering the car to Museums in a manner which is probably illegal by IRS standards and no doubt against eBay Terms of Service. (If you win who is going to pay eBay's commission?) Also, the offerer has a questional feedback number.

Yes there are several red flags including the 'minor' item of missing couplers!! No Viginia, you do not weld 'em back in and be ready to have it on the rails. And ONLY two doors cut into the sides, new toilets, fixtures, furnishings, etc. And if you scrape up the blacktop paving you can roll it right back onto the IC - I bet they are really waiting for that to happen!

My guess is that it looks like a railcar, but anyone interested in preservation would take a long and hard look before ever making plans to get it back to as it was on the IC, or prior to that. Time to move on, there are plenty of other candidates.
