In this situation, the wheel centers are of cast steel and thus could be welded to. 5/8" thick bands which were rolled to the proper radius were then applied to the centers by welding. Fillet welds and plugs welds were used. Each complete band consisted of 4 sections of plate (they were cut into quarter sections to make it easier to handle).

After the bands were applied, the wheel centers were then turned to return them to their original diameter of 56 inches. With a tire thickness of 3 1/2 inches, we end up with a wheel diameter of 63 inches.

There is (or was) an AAR recommended practice for this and that is what we followed.

About having NS allow a steam locomotive run on their mainline....it would be a good thought, and it might only be a thought!But who knows what the future is going to hold!
