Sandy Mitchell just passed on to me the message that O. Winston Link died of a heart attack yesterday in Mt. Kisko, NY. He was 86.

Mr. Link's images of the last days of mainline steam on the N&W in the 1950s have become legends in both railway and art circles.

More information in tomorrow's RyPN Briefs.

For all of us who had the pleasure of making the acquiantance of Mr. Link, there is some consolation in knowing he was determined and driven to do things his way until the end.

He died driving himself to the hosptial.

That is so "him," and just another (and final) chapter in the life of a solid and independent man.

Peace be with you, Mr. Link. We are all the richer for sharing our time on earth with you.

What a loss. The man was truly the Ansel Adams of steam locomotive photography at night.

A question for the group: Did link still own his steam locomotive, and if so, what might be its disposition. I truly hope his negatives to go a trustworthy institution that will care for them and make them available for generations to come to enjoy and appreciate the man and his work. Here's another reminder guys, if you haven't already, make sure your will includes your preferred disposition for your railway collection.

How true, but also what about his recordings, and the MOVIE FILM. We have only seen the tip of the iceberg here. Remember Mr. Link had The N&W's permission to go places where no-one else could.
There are alot of tapes with Y-6s on Blue Ridge, and they are great fun, but Mr. Link's movies must have some real rare stuff...like riding on the roof of the caboose at speed behind 1238...
and Roundhouse scenes... and Abingdon Branch !!! I'm getting excited! WHO HAS THE MOVIE FILMS ?
....And while I think of it, did anyone record Mr. Link's presentation at the 1987 Roanoke Convention ? If so, can I buy a copy ? His humor was as good as anything on Comedy Central.

Sorry about that, somehow my whole message got deleted about Link. Will work on it perhaps another time when I have more time to do so.

CBS "Sunday Morning" show with Charles Osgood had a nice tribute to Link yesterday, February 4.
