I know that the FL-9's are starting to go. But what about the FP-10's? I'm particularly concerned about them because they started life as GM&O F-3's. I'd like to see at least one of those go back home to Illinois and be restored in its red and maroon livery.

Easier said than done. They were completely rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen when they went to MBTA, and their appearance was heavily modified along with their innards. Presently they kind of resemble F-9's, not the F-3's they were built from. It would be quite difficult to build them back, the hardest part being obtaining and installing the "chicken-wire" grating, the raised ventillation fans, and perhaps extra porthole windows. I think it would be great if someone did this; however, I'm not particularly optimistic.

I don't know. That's why I asked the question. I remember them being heavily rebuilt by ICG at Paducah before they headed to Boston. I know they resemble F-9's more than their original F-3 form, but GM&O also operated F-7's which very closely resemble F-9's. So far, the only unrebuilt GM&O cab was a shell on display at an ex-GM&O depot in Missouri, and was torched when the town got tired of looking at it.

I would like to see one of them survive in their original paint scheme even if they can't be backdated into F-3's.

Nice thought. Have you run this idea past the GM&O Historical Society? They own GM&O caboose #2954 and keep it at the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, IL.

Issue 94(Spring/Summer 2000) of the GM&O Historical Society News has a list of the disposition of the MBTA FP10's along with their MBTA and original GM&O numbers. It can be ordered from the GM&O Historical Society (www.gmohs.org). If/when Metro North disposes of their FP-10's, we will make every endeavor to note and list that information in one of our publications. Unfortunately for the Society, restoring an FP-10 to red and maroon is beyond the financial means of the Society.
